A new gouache painting, part of my "cottagecore" series. For this, I used the Zorn palette, one of the most restrictive palettes around. Except the b&w paints, the only other Holbein colors used were yellow ochre, and Chinese orange (Vermillion). The palette creates a very specific, vintage-y vibe which I love.

In the last few days I've switched my painting style almost exclusively towards the cottagecore aesthetic, with very limited palettes of muted gouache colors. It's possible that I'm entering a new phase in my art that might last a while. While cottagecore is not a new style for me, I was switching to other themes whenever I felt like painting something different, mostly with watercolor. But having done a few paintings of that style now, it's obvious that gouache is the right medium for it. You need the layering complexity to get the best out of the style, you need the painterly feel and thickness of the paint. So far, I'm having a blast!

EugeniaLoli,

Thank you so much! :) It's interesting you mention this, I was chatting with my brother earlier today and he was telling me why I don't do surreal artworks anymore (I used to be a surreal collage artist), and I just replied that I'm at a phase/age now that I just want calm and peace.

This is my latest gouache. Due to my past as a surrealist collage artist, I don't quite like it making surreal paintings (I want the two art forms to feel different), but I liked the idea of this one, as it was playful and illustrative at the same time.

This is one of the first illustrations I made when I started painting more seriously in early 2020. It doesn't show from this scan, but it was painted with metallic/gold paint, so the original shines beautifully.

I love painting "cottagecore" themes these days... The style has seen a resurgence in the last 10 years, as more people are dreaming of leaving the big city, and living a more traditional life in nature.

First order of business when I get to Greece will be to have my own garden and greenhouse in the backyard. Painted with watercolors.

I usually end up sleeping in the wee hours of the day, for better or worse (mostly worse). When I try to sleep earlier, this mental image that I eventually painted, is the only one that helps me fall asleep.

This was the first major illustration I made, back in 2016. At the time I had a booming career doing collage art, but I was getting bored with it, and wanted something more engaging and difficult to do. But then I got some negative feedback by another illustrator I admired, and I stopped painting then and there. It wasn't until February of 2020 that I picked up a brush again, soon after I moved to Spokane, WA and was indoors all day due to snow. In retrospect, I shouldn't have stopped painting.

Some watercolors of mine in a children's book illustration style. I have been dreaming of writing and illustrating a children's book (I had a good idea of teaching kids about timezones), but then AI art arrived and it killed that whole market segment.

Missing my home in Greece, Skiadas. And the long hiking, or drive, all the way up to my village's mountain ("Baldenezi"), where a church of prophet Elias is located. Once a year in July all surrounding villagers are getting there to have a feast together. We'd usually eat boiled local goat that people would carry with them and share, but these days it's more like commercial trucks with food... Ah, the good ol' days, when I was 10 and my grandma of 75 yo and yet she was faster than me hiking the difficult terrain to get up there. "C'mon already!", she'd say. Kids those days...

There are two things about me that have cost me a lot in terms of friendships over the years. One, I have trouble looking someone at their eyes (I have to look at their mouth, or I often I don't understand what they're saying for some reason -- including in my native Greek). My hearing's fine, but I'm not so sure about my left brain that handles language (I was born too early, too light in weight, and almost didn't make it).

Secondly, I roll my eyes back often, without reason.

Both are involuntary, and part of my natural makeup. But I believe people think that I do that on purpose, so they avoid me as rude or something. Has cost me greatly, especially when I was in high school.

So it was time to make fun of the situation and paint an illustration about it, using my new mineral handmade watercolors.

This one took me a while to complete, but I enjoyed the process. It has gouache, watercolor and collage elements on it. I hope next year to start a vegetable garden on our new home.

Grandma and ram, with colored pencils. That was back a couple of years, when I wanted to write and illustrate a children's book. Then AI came along, and destroyed that market segment completely.

Cottage life, with watercolors. I grew up in a mountain village in Greece, so such life is something I adore. In a few months my husband @jbqueru and I will be leaving the US after ~25 years, and go back to Greece. I intend to fix that house I grew up (currently in bad condition), so I can spend time there. Maybe even grow some trees and berries. Scroll to see all four pictures.
