A watercolor painting I did, inspired by a children's book illustration from the 1950s.

Raining days are my favorite. I sleep so well when it rains. It gives me some kind of comfort and safety. Painted with watercolors and gouache.

"Look Scully! A flying monster!".

But... but... the important thing is right behind you, Mulder!

Was trying to have a bit of fun with watercolors tonight, but I really couldn't bother to develop this further. I was more interested in watching youtube videos about the end of capitalism.

Two gouache paintings I made for an online challenge sometime back.

Continuing my tech-related post from yesterday, I'd say that my dream computer these days is a capable Risc-V-based mini computer running Debian. The Risc-V is the only open source ISA architecture today, but it is not 100% there yet in terms of speed: it gets about 500 points in the CPU score, while an M1 Macbook Air gets about 14,000 points, and Ubuntu with Gnome to run well-enough it needs about 3500 points. Video codecs are an issue too. It still runs well-enough Debian with XFce though. So we aren't there yet, but its time will come.

I haven't painted much lately. I mostly sit down and watch 1980s videos on youtube about vintage computing (e.g. the "Computer Chronicles" news show, that was apparently shooting very close to where I was living for years in California, but didn't know about it). I've decided that if this was 1977, and money wasn't an obstacle, I'd get a TRS-80 computer rather than an Apple II. And that I wouldn't get a PC until 1984, until the Tandy 1000 came out. In between, I'd get probably an Atari 800, and a C64. By 1985, I'd get an Atari ST, an Amiga, and a Mac 512k. Then an Apple IIgs in 1986, and a NeXT in 1988. After that, in the 1990s, Windows takes hold and it all becomes more mature in terms of tech, and honestly, kinda boring. The early days of personal computing were the exciting ones!

The only exception I'd do is to get a BeBox in 1996, which ran my favorite OS of all time, BeOS. In fact, that's how I met my husband, he was a graphics/kernel/build engineer for Be Inc, and I was a news reporter, and games porter for BeOS. Shame how this amazing OS went down, with Microsoft killing it.

As for Linux, I never found it interesting in its heydays of late 1990s to early 2000s (despite reporting on it a lot for OSNews.com, and testing/reviewing every distro under the sun), because it never worked well on the desktop back then. Not by my standards anyway, for a desktop market that was already maturing fast with Win2000/XP, and OSX. It just never worked right apart from the server sector back then. Linux is more mature now on the desktop, which is why I use Linux a lot more now, than then. I have 5-6 computers dedicated to it (mostly Debian or Ubuntu -- but I'll be moving Ubuntu to Mint), only 1 Windows, and 2 Mac.

"Cleaning the Pond". Another cottagecore themed watercolor painting, painted with handmade paints. I avoided using cool colors in it, to give it a vintage vibe.

Halloween is finally here! Dressing up and going out to get some candy! Or, I could stay in, and paint this #watercolor painting! :-)

A walrus painted on watercolor. BTW, I've noticed that engagement on the fediverse is way down than it was 2-3 months ago. I do hope people return. Personally, I use almost nothing but the fediverse services now: PixelFed, Mastodon, Lemmy. The chronological feed, and finding new users to follow via hashtags, is the only thing that makes sense to me. These recommendation engines on the big social media is a total of usability. You can never be found there, if the algorithm doesn't like you for any reason.

One thing that I find ironic is that most people put all the blame for climate change to big corporations. They're guilty alright, but somehow, people forget their own eco-footprint. It's our nearly constant purchases that drive these big corporations to do evil. So, let's not put all the blame to professor Moriarty.

Painted with gouache.

The first snow just fell here in Spokane, so it inspired me to paint these two siblings sledding down the hill with watercolors yesterday.

We currently live in an empty house, since the movers took our stuff last week. A couple more weeks here in Spokane, and then we'll be off to France for two months at my in-laws, before we fly to our forever home in Greece. That's when all our stuff are expected to arrive too.

An ink & watercolor painting inspired by the traditional life in Epirus, Greece, the place I'm from.

By 5 am the shepherds would follow their sheep & goats atop the mountain for the day (rain or shine). There they'd cover much ground, play the flute, eating feta cheese, bread & olives for lunch, and have a siesta under a tree, before coming down from the mountain in late afternoon.

The women would usually be at the opposite end, down the valley by the river, tending the wheat fields.

The kids would be at home (many girls before 1950 weren't send to school at all, while boys might attend just 1-6 years depending on how good students they were or not). The kids would be tending to chickens, recently-born animals, pigs, donkey, the additional vegetable garden by the house, bread-making, yogurt/feta-making, drying of herbs, cooking, and general housekeeping.

Just before the sun sets, they'd milk the animals: the parents would milk, and the kids would order the animals to enter the pen one by one for milking. Then, the family would have a quick dinner together, feed the dogs & cats with their leftovers (mostly bread & milk, as meat would be eaten only once a week, and very often less than that -- my mountainous ancestors hated most seafood, but sometimes they'd concede to eat eels from the river). Then they'd sleep soon after the sun sets. And the same thing would happen the next day... Sundays and religious feast days had only a small change in the routine.

A hard life for everyone. Electricity arrived in my village in 1971. My mom was a teenager when she saw electrical devices for the first time.

So, I'll like to discuss what's going on with the two major online shops that artists rely on to sell prints and products. Well, they've been hard at it in getting their own #enshittification, as they now require monthly subscriptions from artists in order to allow them to upload their art for sale. Gone are the days where everyone could make an account and sell their art. Now you gotta pay to play. Basically, they get their cut from sales, and now they get subscription money too. The golden age for any kind of social media business and subsequent running an online shop was from 2010 to 2020. If you were around during that time, congrats! You probably had an art career. Today, it's near impossible to do so.
