The kingdom of Israel existed. It ceased to exist. The ethno-state by that name will not last forever.

I guess something similar can be said of any nation. Ukraine springs to mind. Israel is an artificial construct, which has proven to be a disastrous mistake.

    Democracy is far from perfect, but it's the best that we've come up with. The US's implementation of Democracy is far from the best in the world, but it's what you've got.

    Having the right to vote makes you responsible for the outcome of the election. Refusing to vote doesn't relieve you of that responsibility. You've just surrendered your opportunity to influence the outcome.

    Plato didn't have much time for Democracy. The Democracy that he derided was Athenian, which is nothing like the US version. That version is a product of the 18th century. Its age is showing.

    So what form of Democracy do you favour? What are you doing to bring it about? Throwing a tantrum won't do it. Whining won't do it.

    As for the plutocracy, that's just Capitalism doing its thing. Capitalism harnesses greed & self-interest. There's value in that, but we need to keep in mind the nature of what's in the harness. Capitalism must never be allowed to run free.

    George Monbiot coined a term that seems apt: "Totalitarian Capitalism". That's the US in a nutshell.

    I grew up in a Zionist household, spent 12 years in a Zionist youth movement, lived 4 years in Israel, and have friends and family who served in the IDF.

    When that is your world, it's hard to see apartheid when it's happening.

    I grew up in France, in a Jewish community where the norm was unconditional love and support for Israel. Zionism wasn't even named because that's all we knew. Jews were nearly wiped by pogroms and repeated holocausts, and a Jewish state was the only way to keep us safe.

    All Zionism is rooted in trauma and fear. It is first and foremost an ideology of self-liberation. It's about love Jewish people, survival for Jewish people. But Zionism is like any other ethnic nationalism, it's about prioritizing our safety and well-being.

    Comedians have pointed out that reality has a progressive bias (Rob Corddry in 2004 and Steven Colbert in 2006 come to mind), but this from Cory Doctorow really strikes a chord:
