"A judge blocks the foreclosure sale of Elvis' Graceland, after his heir alleges fraud"

A fascinating story, but what got me was the bit about Graceland being valued at $400 million. For 14 acres. That's about $28M per acre. That's approaching mid-town-Manhattan prices.

This how much Elvis was revered? Still an amazing draw? Can't think of any other person whose home has so much value.

I’ve always seen this, along with ‘unsubscribe’ links, only to serve as confirmation of the email address or phone number as being live and valid with a person on the other end. Which the spammer then uses to mark the buckshot of their shotgun approach as a valid ID to sell to other info brokers.

It isn’t really any law that seems to be enforced very well if you ask me, nor enforceable at all. The majority using such tactics are spam scam. Even if a bot is handling the ‘do not call’ request. Now, are you willing to sell that real estate we think you own?

"NYPD will deploy drones to respond to 911 calls"

  • Pilot program is in 5 precincts.
  • Each precinct will get rooftop drone platform
  • Calling it “drones as first responders”

This a good thing? Drones can certainly get eyes to an emergency quickly. Video footage admissible in court?

Privacy implications? Will people be shooting these down?

@davemark might be good for ‘which way did they go?’ Reconnaissance, but I can easily see them chasing and observing ‘the wrong guy’.

We’ve seen manned helicopters with heat and night vision doing the same thing. This is still going to need a ‘pilot’ albeit sitting at a desk somewhere.

"Apple says the majority of Mac users also own an iPad, which likely means macOS is never coming to the iPad"

I, for one, don't want macOS on my iPad.

I love the simplicity of the magic piece of glass that is iPad.

I do wish we had an iPadOS that worked more cleanly with my Mac. Hard to put into words, but I wish the shared models were more similar.

Finder on the Mac and Files on iPad for example. Very different experience.

But macOS on my iPad. Nah.

Went to a dinner last night, folks were raving about their air fryers. This something worth exploring? A fad?

@davemark they seem to be a fave of people trying to avoid deep frying (people hate handling and storing oil). 90% of the people I know that use them are eating chicken wings and frozen french fries.

It used to be hilarious when a 3 minute vid would have some 45 minute preroll ad placement some poor fool had paid for. Of course I skipped it, at least you could then.

You want your ads seen? Make them short and to the point. They will still work with your target audience without alienating the possible converts.

Still use physical calendars.

It’s about granularity and what I can glance at at once. I do not need a daily (hour, minute) schedule which is the default on many ‘computer calendars’, my needs are more like week, month, year.

I go to computer calendars
most often when determining what year June 17th fell on a Saturday, that sort of thing.

First, it’s great that @MichaelWhelan is on Mastodon. What an amazing artist.

Second, his recent post featured a spherical alien that I instantly recognized from my childhood. https://mastodon.art/@MichaelWhelan/112428886103083708

It’s from this book, published in 1980, which had a cover image that is also burned into my brain.

Chancerubbage,
@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social avatar

@siracusa I haven’t found confirmation that John Berkey was also a Matte Painter for the movies, but I think he was. He had a way of choosing the right colors and suggesting more detail than was in the painting with a few parallel and perpendicular marks suggesting realistic highlights. I had the movie poster for Delaurentus King Kong that he did, you could get lost in the cityscape that ‘wasn’t’ there.
