@gruber the concept really sold the book, but the movie killed all interest. Was it the actors, script, other? I’ll read reviews. So far I haven’t heard or read anything more articulate than ‘avoid’.

I thought at worst it might fall into a Big Fat Greek Wedding Vibe. Spy films and books can have a tongue-in-cheek edge, but they should never be self aware about it.

Connery Bond knew the right balance.

@CelloMomOnCars further from the cities, in lands of no mass transit, people work, commute, and congest traffic regionally in a large 30+ minute commute radius.

This may affect hiring, in the way insurance mandates turned many jobs into part time jobs.

Mass Transit needs to be normalized again. It is class divided, and xenophobia damaged.

In most Areas HOV lanes work opposite to their intent.

Reason 14,456 Mastodon is better than Twitter: Yesterday after Iran launched its massive missle and drone strike on Israel, Twitter was awash with FUD about how Biden had started WWIII.

I’m not kidding, the entire site was one conspiracy thread after another that world war 3 was about to start. Air traffic closed over Washington DC, Netanyahu had left Israel in the only jet allowed to fly there, accompanied by spurious screenshots of air traffic radar. It’s still happening NOW.

Utter trash.

At least you are nnow.

Yesterday I listened to an excited @siracusa say May-Naze over and over- the most ‘southern’ I’ve ever heard his accent dip. I don’t think I’ve ever swallowed the middle ‘o’ syllable completely, there is always a vestige there, a shmear.

Chancerubbage,
@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social avatar

@siracusa it just hit me that way.

I don’t think giving it three syllables is necessarily a ‘southern drawl’ either. But many southern accents skip and shorten more than the drawn out honeydripper Hollywood version.

I’d bet non-rhotic New England tends to say may-naze too, although Rs don’t have a thing to do with it.

I have a short almost absent schwa in there, but it is there. May yun aze like a very short bridge between May and Naze. May owns the N more than -aze does.

Back in the day, phone numbers used to belong to carriers. So if you switched carriers, you changed phone numbers.

Feels like the same situation with social networks.

If I move to a new social network, all my followers have my "old number".

Imagine if there was a level of indirection (like an Apple ID or an email) that always led to my current social network.

Impossible? Dumb idea? 🤔

Chancerubbage,

Rephrasing my question:

If I turn off iCloud (say, I stop paying the monthly fee), I assume I will lose access to all files in the cloud but NOT downloaded to my Mac.

Is there a way to backup ALL my Mac's files, both on device and in the cloud?

Happy to buy a large enough drive. My concern is that Time Machine only backs up what's on my device, depends on iCloud to back up the cloud stuff.

#Apple #Mac #iCloud #TimeMachine

Chancerubbage,
@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social avatar

@davemark

Superduper, bootable local backup? It’s a clone.

But that is easily complicated by having a network of multiple Apple devices throughout your home any NAS as a central server, etc.

How much iCloud storage do you have have? Is the top tier enough?

davemark, to apple
@davemark@mastodon.social avatar

If I replace my old Mac with a new one, will EVERY photo from that machine automatically migrate to the new one?

Will EVERY music file in my library (including ripped CDs) make it over?

Will the new machine automatically become the master database for music/photos? Is there a way to verify this?

Is there any step to take to eliminate the risk of losing music/photos from the move? I've got "optimize Mac storage" enabled.

Advice?
#Apple #Mac #iCloud

Chancerubbage, (edited )
@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social avatar

@davemark I’d always use migration assistant to transfer files. I’ve rarely done a macOS update without a full bootable backup on local media. As opposed to depending on the cloud.

I have also started with a blank slate on getting a new Mac or other Apple Device, just because it can be so time consuming. I have lots of old data only on old machines.

I might settle for what my Apple ID and iCloud could repopulate, but I don’t depend on it. And Local is often faster, if bandwidth consticted.

"Rapid growth in electric vehicle (EV) adoption has raised the question of how EVs affect the electricity rates paid by all households, including those that do not own EVs.

[An analysis by Synapse found] that, since 2011, EVs have contributed much more in utility revenues than costs. Because of this, EVs have helped apply downward pressure on rates."

Chancerubbage,
@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social avatar

@CelloMomOnCars

Prices still go ‘down’ in any corporate entity? I thought the new rules were to hold inflationary rates in place for increased profits as much as possible.

I suppose electrical capacity has a use it or lose it aspect that does create actual rate pressure; it is truer to supply/demand curve.

Chancerubbage,
@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social avatar

@CelloMomOnCars
The difference from other economies might be- if consumer demand drops due to prices, it is a also loss to utility corps, as their ‘inventory’ has a shelf life; they have a stronger need to maintain a certain level of demand for efficiency’s sake, or that demand is gone. More downward rate pressure for the provider themselves.

69.5 – 21 = 48.5

"About 69.5 gigawatts (GW) of #coal plant capacity came online last year, of which two-thirds were built in China, according to the report. There were also plants built in Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Japan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, South Korea, Greece and Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile, a slowdown in coal plant shutdowns in the US and Europe led to more than 21GW retiring last year.

The net annual increase is almost 48.5GW for the year, the highest since 2016."

Chancerubbage,
@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social avatar

@CelloMomOnCars are they moving to where the coal is?

Just thinking off hand of coal being shipped to new areas that have never used it for power generation, how much that is added to the carbon footprint.

Or are the developing areas finding and mining new coal nearby?

I reckon new plants are further from where the coal actually is.

As with everything I have theories.

Damage to hair cells, tightening of pores during period of hairloss.

Hair texture is a fight between the battering ram of the hair how large that ram is, ant the tightness of the dermis it has to fight through.

I bet others have this explanation as well
