It would be really cool if we could suggest alt text for images and then the original author could just approve it and it would be added

BreoganHackett,
@BreoganHackett@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@LadyStrawberries I feel like this would need to be opt in n a per post basis as there's a lot of room for abuse on stuff like selfies, but I definitely agree that it should be a feature.

I just finished playing through Anthology Of the Killer and I am feeling so inspired. I might just attempt to make a Killer of the Killer ( to steal all of the "active players" from an indie title of limited length :P )

More seriously this is making me come back around to thinking about a horror anthology concept I was going to do in bitsy but think I can probably make more interesting in 3D.

I find myself hastily scribbling the layout of a fictional seaside town in my sketch book at 1:30 am

@onelson I'd ber scared too if I was about to manifest the Garfield killer into real three dimensional space ;P More seriously thoug I'd envcourage you to give it a go, keep things scrappy to start and don't overcommit on art and 3D can be a very freeing to start working in.

So I'm making a gardening game where you plant pixelated pngs of plants in a series of 7 walled gardens around the base of a tower and each garden represents the balance of audio in a loop. Then when you go into the hall in the center you can hear the full sequence of all the individual loops in order blending between the balances defined by your planting pattern. It's been too long since I worked on a more experimental walking sim type thing :3

Pixelated photo cutouts of trees in a space surrounded by walls with a pixelated grass texture on the ground. The base of a round tower looms in the background.
A field of pixelated photo cutouts of flowers and bushes with tall walls sutrrounding it. The base of a round tower looms in the background
A view down the length of a walled in area towards an arch in the base of a round tower. There are flowers and tall trees to the left and right.

Playing Turok today for the first time and it's got to be one of the most fun titles I've tried from that era of shooters. Not sure what people's take on the cultural stuff at play is, it certainly feels like a product of its time...

Always impressed by Night dive ports though, clean and smooth play.

In a rare occurrence for a retro FPS I have an intense urge to go back and finish playing through this one. Was just moment to moment a high concentration of fun.

BreoganHackett,
@BreoganHackett@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Tearcell yeah original, and I was planning to play the other 2 but not expecting to want to finish any of them so wanting to finish the first is a nice surprise.

Here's an idea: Instead of just blocking out AI scrapers, what about making sure that all that they see is some utter nonsense?

BreoganHackett,
@BreoganHackett@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@alda I mean that's already a pretty accurate description of most web content and the reason the current output is goofy and prone to recommending dangerous things as the correct solution.

I'm curious: Do we have any data showing a bump in sales AFTER adding anti-piracy measures to an already released game?

It feels like the negative reception & loss of platform compatibility eclipses any possible benefits.

BreoganHackett,
@BreoganHackett@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@fabraz I think large companies just think ensuring nobody gets a product for free is more important than the overall quality. There's also like DRM companies exist to solve a problem for other companies so they spend a lot of time pushing their services to companies and the people involved in those conversations are just so distant from the realities of the customer or artists.

After 6 months, I've had to resubscribe to Adobe PS. I work with too many people who send me PS files and there is no alternative that can open and save them reliability. It sad how many "helper" apps Adobe installs and how often they try to connect to the internet. I block them all, but it's scary. I have to unblock them every 30 days. Please do not suggest alternatives unless you know for a fact they load and save .psd files seamlessly. Do not suggest GIMP or I block you.

BreoganHackett,
@BreoganHackett@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@grumpygamer I mean you could also maybe ask the people you work with to send you a different non proprietary format, surely that wouldn't be an unreasonable ask right? Totally makes sense this would happen but I genuinely hope you don't have to stick with that subscription for too long.

generating a mesh for water surfaces that has baked into vertex colors:

  • distance to the nearest shore
  • depth of the water

allows for some very nice effects in shader!

BreoganHackett,

@noio This is the good stuff, I've always wanted to do something like this! Wonder what you could encode in the 2 extra channles, I guess maybe flow if you were doing it for rivers too.

I actually much prefer the "American" definition of Liberal (to mean, more or less, progressive) to the classical/European definition.

I understand the historical context but, especially when one party is calling themselves "Conservatives", it's kind of screwed up for "Liberal" to mean "Conservative" as well

BreoganHackett,
@BreoganHackett@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@SirTapTap I think that liberal can't mean what it means in europe to you is more of an indictment of the US political system than any flaw of language :)

⚠️ BIG NEWS!⚠️

For #BandcampFriday today I finally released my dreamy dnb album Spaceship Submarine.

It's 5 euros and it would mean a lot to me if you bought it. I've been without my usual paying work for a couple of months and my progress in saving so I can move to my own place and move on with my life has backslid.

Even if you can't afford to buy my music, a listen and/or share would be really impactful. https://breoganhackett.bandcamp.com/album/spaceship-submarine

Oh no. Naming problem, the bane of programming. A class detects one of two things, depending on the mode. In one mode, it detects if a point is right of a line. In another mode, it checks if a point is inside a circle. It's used for checkpoints where both are useful ways to define when a checkpoint should be triggered, depending on the checkpoint.

I need a variable name for a bool which signals whether this is true or not - that works for both modes.

BreoganHackett,
@BreoganHackett@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Nifflas if the class is something like CheckpointValidator (if that's it's only use case) you could have a bool called valid or isValid.

@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

gamedevs always dispense the wisdom that you shouldn't make a platformer because the field is too crowded. if you ask me, that's wrong. the problem with making a platformer is that the gatekeepers, the people who decide which games to cover in the press and the people who decide which games get shown in events and showcases go "a platformer? meh"

people, in my experience, are actually pretty hungry for good platformers, it's just that the gatekeepers won't let you market one effectively which means your launch will almost certainly be dead in the water

BreoganHackett,
@BreoganHackett@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko I agree but I also know due to having contributed to it with a project of my own 2 years into learning dev that the genre is flooded with amateur attempts and it can muddy the waters around more considered approaches. Also I think a big reason platformers break through when they're successful is people recognising previous work from the devs. I think you nearly have to prove you can make an interesting game before people will believe you can make an interesting platformer.

folks: what are you switching to?

I've thought about waiting to see how bad it gets, but I don't really want to get any more invested in a product whose future and stewardship (i.e. pricing model) seems uncertain.

BreoganHackett,
@BreoganHackett@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@csilverman I'm not sure which workflow you're looking to replace but if it's image editing I can highly recommend Krita, its free, open source, and been capable of everything I've needed in the last few years without wasting time on novelty or buzzword tech.

Setting up a new PC (Windows in this case but many Linux distros are as bad) is a study in how long I can control my temper at all the bullshit tacked on.

Today I find my taskbar no longer works because I'd turned off widgets. I do not want to know the weather where my ISP has an office, but I do want to run programs, that being the thing an OS is supposed to be for. I got the taskbar working again (widgets on, widgets off fixed that!), but now the task bar is back to searching the internet.

BreoganHackett,
@BreoganHackett@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@dougbinks windows keeps searching %appdata% in bing because that's the function of the first search result when you type it in start but if you type it out and hit enter it actually goes to appdata. Basic functionality I've been using since I was like 13 broken because they couldn't compete in the browser market and make it profitable. My default browser isn't edge it's just what the start menu search decides for you????!

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.
