When I was a child I always knew my parents loved me.

Whenever I was sad or came home with bad grades, they said: "We love You".

Now that I am older I believe that my chinese brother "Hou" was probably more involved than I previously expected.

I torn on getting a #FairPhone 5.

On one hand it looks great and I'd love to support their mission.

But those 700€ without case (40€) and display protection (32€) is quite something to swallow.

I find the camera also only okay-ish. But since I post-process most of my pictures, that should be fine.

Maybe I should wait until I can put an alternate android rom without Google?

Decisions... maybe someone else can chime in and help me?

I HATE blogs and CMS systems that have a "simple" theme/design that looks clean but actually is bloated with MBs of CSS, JS and images for no apparent reason.

I don't think the authors actually understood what they were doing.

There are pricedbs for general currencies but none for ETFs that I was able to find.

Before I reinvent the wheel I wanted to know whether I missed something?

I think there are websites right now which block users when they disabled all tracking/set security to high.

I have a few times now visited websites which I first had access to but then displayed a "Access denied" after a few minutes.

My IP is not on a blocklist and neither do I have any shady stuff going on.

Am I the only one? What is going on here? Do we really go so far to be anti-consumer?

Looking at you, #nokia #galaxus and alike.

The Internet is dying.

Websites with libraries and media pulled from 30+ domains seem to be no exception anymore.

Who does this? Who has the guts to call himself a web developer or Website Administrator and then go crazy with includes?

At very least bundle it yourself. I cant look at Websites nowadays. Doesnt help that I know 1. how to make it better and 2. why it happens. :-/

I was working on a 40" ultrawide on the office and seriously, I cannot work on it.

How do you have a sane workflow to make use of such space and still not be annoyed how often you need to turn your head?

I think around 27-30" is the perfect size for working. My neck hurts from seeing all those gamer and ultra workstations with a monitor as wide as the table.

I got a weird idea.

Instead of installing a weather app on my phone I am making a startpage that is reachable on VPN only.

I will gradually then display more info as needed, like public transport issues or other relevant info.

No idea why I didnt think of this earlier. Self-hosting for the win!

Controversial opinion:

A "cat" can only be useless in scripts, not in the direct tty.

Because more often than not, it saves you time as you dynamically adjust your command.

Who always knows which 2nd command supports reading a file via argument? And even remembers the argument name?

I think even in scripts its fine to use cat, it often makes it more clear what you're doing.

Dear FOSS community,

is there some #oss #backup app that you can suggest which keeps backing up in the background (always running)?

Preferable something similiar like #borgbackup.
Needs to run on a mac.

I have some family members which ... dont really know much about computers so letting a backup job run periodically or even ask them to start it is a lost cause.

At first when I used #Windows all the time I thought #Linux was complicated.

Now since I use Linux all the time I can't figure out how people use Windows productively.

Like how do you manage to get around all these shortcomings? The propietary formats and impossibility to modify the data by yourself? The missing automation in most of your tasks? All the cash-grabbing apps that want you to pay for each and every feature?

It's like Windows and Linux users life completely different (work)lives.

Today I took the time to take a look at my followers and found some really interesting personalities in there!

It's quite sad to have such a limited bubble only. There are so many great minds on Fosstodon, yet my time and resources are so limited.

Sometimes I wish I could sit down and drink a coffee or tea with each and every one of you and talk about your ideas and opinions, even (or especially) if they are not like mine.
