This is one of a series, each unique, of my hand made cyanotypes on watercolour paper (14" x 11") with an image of a cloud-filled sky overprinted with my linocut print of several kites, and wind-socks each collaged with beautiful Japanese washi papers.
The carp-shaped Koinobori wind socks (also known as satsuki-nobori) are flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no sekku, or Children's Day each May 5.
Happy May Day! This is hand-pulled lino block print of the Jack-in-the-Green (or Jack o' the Green) an English folk tradition for May Day. Wearing a conical or pyramidal wicker or wooden frame covered in foliage so as to conceal the wearer, the Jack-in-the-Green leads a May Day procession, dancing often with musicians and other figures. 🧵1/2

For the #InsertAnInvert2024 prompt “not long, not limbless” the truly ornate Elvis worm! In 2020, scientists discovered 4 types of scale worms, with shimmering lavender, blue, & orange exoskeletons, which looked like they were wearing sequined jumpsuits like Elvis Presley! They named these worms Elvis worms. These species in the genus the genus Peinaleopolynoe are called P. goffrediae, P. mineoi, P. orphanae, and P. elvisi. 🧵1/n
My beaver lino block print is hand printed on delicate, translucent, handmade Japanese paper with a deckle edge. This is a North American beaver (Castor canadensis), symbol of Canada.
April 7 is International Beaver Day. While a species of “least concern” according to the IUCN Red List of mammals, numbers of NA beavers have been literally decimated since colonization. 🧵1/2

I a naturalistic version mimicking actual colours found in nature but this is one of a series printed on assorted washi to make a series of patterned beetles, each unique.⠀

Good morning Trilobite! This is one of a series of prints of one of the ubiquitous and wildly successful trilobites, prehistoric creatures which lived for hundreds of millions of years, carved by hand in linoleum, printed onto lovely Japanese washi papers and collaged with papers in different colours. 🧵1/2
I thought I would share my portrait of neurologist Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852 - 1934) for #VirtualArtOfNeuro. It shows him as a young man in front of Purkinje and granule cells from a pigeon, based on one of his own drawings. 🧵1/2

For the #SciArtSeptember prompt “metallic” my linocut Osmia lignaria, the metallic blue orchard mason bee.
We think of bees as living in hives, but these bees live in reeds or natural holes which they divide into chambers with mud walls. We also tend to picture yellow and black stripes, but this small bee is blue to blue-green. 🧵1/2
So I decided to continue with a season theme and winter comes right after fall! This next notebook will combine the feel of a frosty forest lost in gentle swirls of snow crystals. ❄️🌨️
Hope to share the finished product soon! :ablobowo:
Presenting the Frozen Forest notebook with a cool winter look, continuing the seasons theme!
As fall cools and the rains give way to snow, forests chill and create a winterland. After a snowstorm, the cold leaves and gentle snowflakes heralds the tranquil peace of winter. ❄️ 🌨️
I made a second cyanotype of a cloudy sky printed with my Lino block with several different kites and wind socks. Then I printed my block on various beautiful patterned and coloured Japanese washi papers, and collaged them on my image. I did a little embellishment with Posca pen.
The koï-shaped wind socks are traditionally flown in Japan on Children’s Day, May 5.
