It's a shame that the Nintendo Wii is so difficult to emulate due to the motion controls.

I've tried using funky old Wiimotes, but they chew through batteries and pairing them with Windows is hit or miss.

You still need a lightbar for them to work right afaik.

Someone should be making a motion control/light gun peripheral with modern design language.

schizanon,

Hell, I've got a set of Valve Index controllers taking up space on my desk; why can't I use those for WiiMotes?

I had once again the opportunity to contribute the use of #NixOS #Linux to the #SteamHardwareSurvey. Also had a #ValveIndex connected, even tho i currently have some software issue with VR games.

This is a very small action to promote #LinuxGaming and #VRonLinux.

Also funny how the Linux version is 6.6.6.

Last Steam Hardware Survey from december 2023. Linux had a market share of 1.97%, more than macOS.
Submitting NixOS Linux to the Steam Hardware Survey. The system uses the Linux kernel version 6.6.6.

windows just deprecated windows mixed reality. thousands of headsets are going to become bricked. open source drivers (monado) do not fully support WMR. they are still selling WMR headsets like the Reverb G2. there is no refund policy. the only way to use WMR is to never upgrade your windows install. fuck microsoft.

kkarhan,

@moth @j0 Also this is the reason why one should NEVER EVER allow or use and/or / standards at all…
To me, shit like this should be as the and purposeful creation of it is amd as well as should be forced to for all platforms (not just but espechally ) or be forced to not only refund everyone but pay the cost of buying a on top…

schizanon, to Steamdeck

Almost five years since the launch of the #valveIndex and it still has tracking issues that they have insist will be fixed in the next version.

I keep hearing great things about the #Steamdeck but after my experinces with the #SteamController and #SteamLink I don't trust #Valve anymore.

No way in hell I'll ever buy another #VR headset from them.

With my GPU finally unthrottled I fired up my #ValveIndex and played some #DirtRally2

It's a great #drivingGame, but playing it in #VirtualReality is a whole other level! The depth helps you see the contours in the track which make a huge difference in a #driving #simulator. It's my favorite #VR game; hands down!

I'm starting to think that I'd rather give the NSA a backdoor into my whole computer than have to enter a BitLocker recovery key one more fucking time.

#encryption #windows #bitlocker

schizanon,

So now my PC boots up to the #BitLocker recovery screen every fucking time. I'm not changing anything about the PCI config.

The other issue is that when I boot with my #SteamVR #valveIndex plugged into #DisplayPort my monitor is blank until I unplug the headset. 😩

Changing monitors has never triggered a BitLocker recovery before. Is this some new hell thanks to the BIOS update!?

#Valve officially releases #SteamVR 2.0 https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/25/23932715/valve-steamvr-2-0

They are only doing this for the #quest3, the #valveIndex is still dead.

I never thought I'd spend money at #GameStop but they have replacement #valveindex controllers for cheaper than you can buy known broken ones for parts on ebay.

Worth a shot before I pay scalper prices since #valve refuses to sell the damn things in singles (yes they're listed but they've never EVER been in stock as singles)

rootfsext2gz, to apple

So Apple has come out with an Augmented Reality (AR) headset device which:

  • Costs $3500
  • Lasts 2 hours
  • Doesn't take you to a different world, but treats the world as a massive screen for your apps
  • Said apps are (as of right now) nothing more than just simple iPhone apps

I'm not going to be so stupid as to say it's dead in the water, because as someone who has a Macbook Pro, an iPhone, an iPad, an Apple Watch, Airpods Pro, Airpods Max (because the Airpods Pro keeps falling out of my ears and headphones have better noise cancellation) I get the appeal and the allure to buying the next Apple wotsit.

But this thing? This thing has zero appeal to me. Not just because of the above, but also because it's something I need to strap on my face in front of my eyes and use for (what it was intended for) long periods of time.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if Apple kept on iterating on it to make it a success like they did with the watch - I've shat on the Apple Watch on launch, and here I am wearing it, due to the constant health and fitness features.

But I just cannot see myself being won over with the AR glasses thing. They look goofy (I said that about the Apple Airpods Max, but bought them second hand for £200 cheaper than the asking price so that's why I got them - I still think they look like shit).

As an aside, I also play video games, and the whole Virtual Reality (VR) was something I was looking forward to and was interested... until the scene was on its last legs.

I think products that ask customers to strap something to their eyes for long (15min+) periods of time aren't going to do well in the market. It's why 3DTVs haven't been successful. It's why VR headsets, despite all the song and dance from Valve, Sony, and Meta, still haven't taken off (I know this is AR, but still)

And just one final thing - I can appreciate the desire for conferencing hardware, but we have webcams and mics. They may not be amazing, but they do the job just fine.

Not only that, but after being stuck at home during COVID, I really, really miss human interaction - and this is coming from an introverted person. I don't mind a phone that allows me to quickly communicate to others from a distance. What I won't do is buy a device that encourages isolation (like VR/AR headsets).
