For some time now, I've noticed that is increasingly hallucinating. I sometimes use it for complex, complicated sentences or to check my wording. More often now, I get commonplace verbs, if I emphasise something in a word, formulate it sarcastically, or very critically. Another thing that utterly gets on my nerves is . The thing is trained patriarchal straight.
Deepl is still the best I know but these kinds of mistakes are increasing.

@Ardeija 1/2 I recently had a key experience: a construction team with a Slavic language I didn't know, and no one knew any other. I was asked to speak my question about a road closure into the boss's mobile phone. He read what I said in real time in his own language. We chatted while the app translated in real time. Spoken with an accent! From that moment on, I believed in the Universal Translator from Startrek. The translation profession will change fundamentally, if not become obsolete in

@Ardeija 2/2 many areas. Unfortunately.
I see this in my case: most of the translations I did for EU projects are now machine-translated and then only edited by foreign language editors. And you can no longer survive on book translations alone if you don't use software tools yourself. So, my work was killed years before.

This, unfortunately, is how the translation industry is going generally. We're increasingly asked not to actually translate anything ourselves, but rather to edit translations produced by machines for much lower rates. The work is a lot more tedious, though I'd welcome the capacity to get more done in less time if doing so really lived up to the fairy tale that computers are supposed to make our lives easier and give us more leisure time.

But technology is just never neutral. It is not a rising tide that lifts all boats; it always disproportionately benefits the people who control it at the expense of everyone else (duh).

Anyways, I'd consider making a pin that says "Talk To Me About Starting a Translators Union", but we mostly communicate by email/text anyways. Sigh...

Solidarity and best wishes to the current and former Duolingo staffers. This sucks.

====
From the article:

The growing use of generative AI is coming at the expense of human workers at Duolingo, a popular language learning app.

Duolingo tells Bloomberg that it's cutting 10% of its contractors, months after its CEO said Duolingo is relying more on generative AI to develop its content.

“We just no longer need as many people to do the type of work some of these contractors were doing. Part of that could be attributed to AI,” a Duolingo spokesperson tells Bloomberg.

This comes after an unnamed Duolingo contractor claimed on Reddit that Duolingo had axed a large number of jobs. “In December 2023, Duolingo ‘off boarded’ a huge percentage of their contractors who did translations,” the contractor wrote. “Of course this is because they figured out that AI can do these translations in a fraction of the time. Plus it saves them money.”

Don't use the word "translator" to refer to translation tools.

A #translator is a highly skilled linguist who can translate a text for its specific use and target audience, taking care of cultural issues, localisation, and any other issues that might cause problems in translation.

A #TranslationTool is an automated tool that can only reproduce a literal version of the original text. The result should never be used as a final text, as it can contain linguistic, factual, and/or cultural errors.

Owlor,

@creative_xl8 While the fight on this front was lost several decades ago, I think there is something to be said for recognizing that a "computer" is a particular occupation, and following the same naming system, the device we call computer should prolly be called a computing tool.

Itty53,

@Owlor @creative_xl8

Somewhere forty years ago was a woman telling her boss she's not a computer, not a thing, don't call her one, but rather she's an engineer ... and he accepted that and things got a little bit better.

You sure you're putting yourself on the right side of that "long lost battle"? Were you there?

Linguistic prescriptivism is rarely ever helpful. Really. I am struggling to find examples outside of language that's already been co-opted for abuse.
