I'd posted bridge photos from our family rail trail the other day, but just ran across a photo explaining its history. Wright’s covered railroad bridge from 1906 is the last that used the double-web lattice trusses. Some nice photos included a stereograph of the Newbury cut. #train#bridge#NH#history
New at my Patreon... I jumped aboard heritage train RM 2036, to join a rail excursion from Longreach to historic Ilfracombe. The highlight? Its unforgettable pub:
Good morning! I'm somewhere north of Brisbane on the Spirit of the Outback, not far to go till we reach the big city. Has been a great journey back from Longreach.

Today's historic #photo of the day: Diesel loco X38 hauls carriage set N3 on a Melbourne-bound broad gauge VLine passenger #train near Parwan, Vic, February 1986.
Parwan is 47km west of Melbourne on the broad gauge direct line from Melbourne to Ballarat. In 1986 when this photo was taken, this was the main line between Melbourne and Adelaide, so in addition to local VLine trains, it carried heavy interstate goods trains between Melbourne and Adelaide as well as The Overland passenger train.
Looks like Sydney Trains is going to drop the jargon from its PA announcements.
From the SMH:
"Commuters will soon be told to “get off” the train, rather than “alight”, after Sydney Trains resolved to overhaul its station announcements to favour colloquial language.
"The phrase “this train terminates here” is also being retired, due to concerns the word “terminates” is difficult to understand."
Back on the Spirit of the Outback, for the run back to Brisbane. This time I get to enjoy the journey without making notes - always a relief. It's rare to be doing something I'm not making notes about.
It's hard to depict this properly, but on this trip on the Spirit of the Outback I have a "twin sleeper" for my sole use. What they've done is remove the partitions between some single compartments to create "doubles" which couples can book. You each have a chair that folds down to a bed, thus sleeping foot-to-foot. :)
Here's a photo that might give you a rough idea of what it looks like - I'm sitting in one compartment and looking through to the other.
New at my Patreon... Here's my arrival by train at Longreach Station, a fine example of Queensland's long-distance rail terminals. I share a surprising fun fact about it too...
I've been on another rail day trip aboard Outback Aussie Tours' shiny old railmotor. This time we headed east to the town of Ilfracombe. Interesting place, with a lot of historic buildings including the best outback pub, the Wellshot Hotel.
New at my Patreon... From Longreach in far west Queensland, I boarded a silver train on an excursion to the Darr River - with the perfect 'smoko' at the end:
Great to see Amtrak putting on new train services in the USA. Behold the Borealis, a new named train connecting Minneapolis/St Paul to Chicago: https://www.amtrak.com/borealis
Looking forward to trying this new service from Amtrak. Still a bit of a hike from Madison to the nearest station but I do think it will be handy for some types of travel.
New at my Patreon... From Brisbane's Roma Street Station, I travelled 1,325km into western Queensland aboard a classic sleeper train - the Spirit of the Outback:
