Today, we're launching Proton Pass, our new password manager, for everyone. Like other Proton services, it’s free, open-source, & end-to-end encrypted. This has been the most popular request, & we’re happy to bring it to you: https://proton.me/blog/proton-pass-launch.

Proton is community-driven. is no different. You can discuss & request new features & get the latest updates on our Reddit community: reddit.com/r/ProtonPass.

To get Proton Pass, visit the Proton Pass website: proton.me/pass.

krzysztofdrozdowski,

@protonmail Do you have a road map for integrating credit card/personal info? Adding this would make Proton Pass a complete package for me.
#ProtonPass #ProtonMail #SecureYourself

nim_a,

@protonmail We have to use the same credentials that we use for #ProtonMail, right? Doesn't this make it less secure?

Interesting post by @protonmail on #Reddit.

I was personally unaware of such allegations, although reading them, I can imagine why some conspiracy theorist could think of this. But, I personally like that they don't just say this a false, but almost say: "Seriously, like if this was true then..."

As usual, a transparent write-up by the team.

Publius_Aelius,

@Stark9837 @protonmail "...why some conspiracy theorist..."
Hello. To beginning, let's make sure we all understand why shouldn’t use this expression, because:

First of all, the theory is something that has no proof that it has no substantiated facts, and there are tweets, with all the necessary references, so it's not "theory" anymore.

Two, let's not use this term. This expression was introduced into the CIA image to discreet "inconsciousness. -->

@ct_bergstrom Now I’m worried my #ProtonMail signature footer has recipients lumping me in with such jerks

calculsoberic, to random

Please, let's never federate with Facebook or Google. I am very concerned what they will do privacy-wise.

sergeant,
@sergeant@qoto.org avatar

@calculsoberic @louis VPN, Encrypted emailservices like #Protonmail and #Tutanota, encrypted messengers like #Threema and #Signal , alternative search engines like #searx.org and #duckduckgo. Using privacy oriented browsers like #Brave and hardened #Firefox like #LibreWolf and so on. There's a lot you can do to withold your personal data. Don't ever believe it's useless or a ran course. There are always things you can do to give away as less info as possible. Don't give in!

Holy shit, @protonmail just doubled my base storage to six terabytes for #ProtonMail, #ProtonDrive, etc. I’m only using a little over 16 GB.

Granted I’ve been a paid subscriber since the summer of 2016 (first on their Plus plan, then on Visionary starting the following year). But this is ridiculous.

Thanks to whomever signed up for #ProtonMail Plus via my referral link! You got a free month and I got a nice credit to my subscription

Check it out: https://pr.tn/ref/0Z7R6D2AX92G

@snonux You’re in luck. It looks like @protonmail heard your plea and introduced a family plan today: https://proton.me/blog/proton-family-plan

It’s literally identical to the legacy Visionary plan I have aside from having 3 TB of shared storage instead of the 6 TB they just upped Visionary to.

ProtonMail's misleading marketing is going to get people killed and imprisoned, and I fucking hate them for it.

edendestroyer,
edendestroyer,

@MediaActivist @hakan_geijer we have to be very realistic about who we trust with our data and on what basis. #ProtonMail clearly cant be trusted for #activism purposes

is starting to show even more ads -- and they're appearing in the middle of email lists.

There's a real benefit to using email software that doesn't rely on YOUR data to generate revenue or train AI.

Thunderbird: Ad-free since 2003.

(Source: https://9to5google.com/2023/05/05/gmail-ads-increase-2023/)

Gmail's web interface showing THREE ads in the middle of a user's email list. (in this screenshot, the ads are from Boost Infinite, Sam's Club, and others)

svenje,

@thunderbird Yes, effectively #gmailads are the reason why I came back to use #thunderbird and nevertheless I have a #gmail address, I don’t use this client anymore. On a #mac on #iphone and on #windows Really a great mail client! And so does my family. In combination with #protonmail and #protonmailbridge an even more cool thing!

pairko,

@thunderbird

First time I tried moving to #Thunderbird I didn't like it, it was gitchy, and I stuck with #Gmail.
In the years after, T-bird got better. #Google got worse, and T-bird became the place to be.
If (when!) the bird integrates simply with #ProtonMail, I'll be able to dump #Pichai entirely.

Search on Mastodon is lousy.

  • I think Protonmail is down.
  • I do a search for ‘Protonmail’ and it shows only mentions of it from my instance…
  • …a single post, by me recommending the service, three weeks ago.

Federated search needs to happen sooner rather than later.

tldr,

@hl Aha, thanks.

That’s a great example of why search is lousy in Mastodon. @bazurk posted with the hashtag #protonmail. A search for ‘protonmail’ didn’t find that post, presumably because it treats hashtags differently.

I like #Tutanota (@Tutanota) a lot, but 3 main problems: not being able to use other mail clients. Not being able to search easily in your mails. Not being able to send encrypted mails (using PGP keys for example) to people who don't have Tutanota, in my case, all my contacts.

If the last two problems were solved, there would be no need to be able to use another client, which we cannot do anyway at the moment.

lienrag,

@retiolus

I'm not happy with #Protonmail's trend towards emphasis on marketing, but at least they integrate PGP use in sending mail (though by default it's the protonmail-generated PGP key, which you have to trust PM with).

Wondering about Proton Mail
After our conversations about #Notesnook with @Leisureguy and @nbcactus I watched an interview with one of the developers and started thinking about secure email.
https://proton.me/mail
I am wondering about how practical a switch it would be. We have domain emails and Gmail addresses, use Gmail interface.
#ProtonMail
I see it includes a VPN but my subscription to #nordVPN lasts another year.
Has anyone done the switch who is prepared to chime in with thoughts?

daj,

@EllieK @Leisureguy
I was about to make the switch. I had purchased a couple of business accounts, and moved a domain over to check functionality.

At the last moment I realised there is no ability to sync contacts with your phone, so I'd need to runs two sets of contacts. I checked and they have no plan on when such a feature will exist.

Such a shame. So many other positives, but data duplication I can live without

Love ... hate their setup process on Windows. Needed sighted assistance because OCR completely butchered the password, and now that I have the password right Thunderbird throws an error at me saying that either it, my email, or the configuration are invalid even though it supposedly added an exception in Windows Firewall.
sigh
