Just read #CHI2024 preprint "The Future of HCI-Policy Collaboration" led by @fabulousqian. Authors argue for greater and more intentional involvement of #HCI researchers with #policy. I appreciated this definition: "In practice, policy design is the iterative process of (1) identifying policy needs, (2) clarifying policy needs (or issue- framing), (3) formulating policy, (4) designing systems and services that implement policy, and (5) evaluating policy outcomes"
During remarks this week, #Trump said he wanted to “pay tribute” to a person he very much respected.
Trump thanked #TomHoman, who served as acting director of #ICE during Trump’s admin [Trump loved “acting” posts bc they aren’t subject to congressional confirmation] & has since been a frequent commentator on #FauxNews.
NEW PODCAST: This week we're taking a look at the EU's once-trumpeted nature restoration law. Can the EU still claim to be a world leader when it comes to going green?
Trump said at a "messaging event" in #GrandRapids, #Michigan, "It's a very bad thing happening. It's going to end on the day that I take office, which will be Jan 20."
The most common used #debit card by financially illiterate people, the #postepay card by #posteitaliane#bank is now forcing you to allow it to access the android.permission.PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS permissions from the android settings, otherwise you can only use it 3 times and then it will stop working.
I will update this when (and if exists) I receive the #privacy#policy link, since this is a disaster
Body of research grows that indicates the e-bike is a silver bullet for the transport ecosystem in reducing traffic & helping people become more active. Of course, mobile people stay & shop on high streets too, so not bad for the economy either: https://www.cyclingelectric.com/news/study-e-bike-riders-drive-less-trips
Fmr #Trump treas sec #Mnuchin is telling investors he has a plan to buy #TikTok
Mnuchin told potential backers he aims to maneuver around its price of >$100B & #China’s ban of the export of recommendation #algorithms.
He indicated he could overcome those hurdles by offering to buy the #app w/o the export-blocked #code, essentially forcing his consortium to remake a service built on billions of lines of code.
Observers, & ≥1 person familiar w/the pitch, have said the idea is so far-fetched that it suggests a lack of familiarity w/how #tech companies work. #TikTok users flocked to the #app bc of its surprising suggestions for videos they might like, & there’s no guarantee any #Mnuchin-driven version could duplicate that success — or beat rivals like #Meta & #Google, who have worked for yrs to mirror the experience w/in their own respective apps, #Instagram & #YouTube. #algorithms#SocialMedia#policy
“Everyone wants to build a #TikTok-level #algorithm. That’s a key element of competition in… #tech …right now,” said Matt Perault, UNC prof & fmr #Facebook dir who studies tech #policy.
“…the biggest cos have thrown a lot of money & #engineering talent at that issue & have struggled to do it. If #Mnuchin thinks he can do that & succeed where…successful cos have struggled, good luck.”
Mnuchin, [is] a fmr hedge fund mngr & Hollywood producer w/no #SocialMedia experience….
