So I've just been doing some tidying in the garage and I found this old . I've put it on charge, but do we think it will boot, and what OS do we think it's running?

@kev Windows XP or some old Ubuntu version?

@kev@fosstodon.org avatar

Well, it was Ubuntu 16.04. So I must have used it (or played with it) for something around 8 years ago.

I've managed to login and connect it to the Internet haha.

I wonder if it will run a new version of #Ubuntu, or maybe #PopOS?

csepp, to debian

#Debian with #Gnome Flashback is actually pretty damn cozy. Firefox ESR runs surprisingly well too, on a #netbook nonetheless.
I think I'll make this my low-effort can-actually-get-work-done-on-this #permacomputing setup.

csepp,

I might add the Regolith repos to it later, if they have a 32 bit repo, that is. (They damn well should, none of their software has a good excuse for being amd64-only.)

A short history of the ASUS Eee PC and netbooks.

I never got one because, although cool, the limited use I'd have done wouldn't justify even the affordable price as I had no mobility or form factor needs.

@amoroso The initial EeePC was pretty cool. It was one of the few laptops at the time with full support for Haiku operating system including wifi.

@istvan Did it support Haiku from the start? Really cool.

Anybody still have a #netbook from ~2009 or so? Do you still use it for anything? My Vaio netbook still works (and lucky me, it's a 64-bit device) but I have no idea what to do with it.

I'm hoping for an immutable Fedora distribution (like Silverblue) based on LXQt at some point. Unfortunately, the netbook can't handle anything at the level of Cinnamon or heavier as a desktop environment.

(Not that I'll ever actually use it for anything, but it's a fun tiny device)

@mikoto@akko.wtf avatar

@zak I have an Inspiron Mini 1012 from 2010. It can run XFCE and LXQt alright. Main limitation is more of the 1024x600 resolution than anything really.

@kkarhan @fuchsiii Ohhhh.... a Sony Vaio P. 😍 A beautiful piece of hardware, released at a very bad time - just before the tablet revolution. After that, that form factor just disappeared - a shame, as I love the portability while still having the keyboard. (And it's Barbie Pink, too!)

whitekiba,

@kkarhan @fuchsiii I have a device like that with modern hardware.

Ciao amici smanettoni.

Dug out my "worse piece of tech", the HP Mini 210-1100 netbook (1GB ddr3, Intel Atom, 1.66 GHz, 250GB HDD). It was a gift–I remember using it and the dreaded lag/frustration with Windows 7 Starter kinda drove me insane. Haven't used it since 2010. Until today that is! I installed antiX-base 32bit Linux and it has been much less laggy and actually usable! Reviving (13yr) old tech is always fun!

@eclecticpassions Raspberry Pis are insanely difficult to get, but I heard that they have taken care of the chip shortage issues and soon to mass produce.

I've been learning cybersecurity for sometime now, I still need to get good lol.

BTW, SSH is pretty powerful, you can tunnel a remote local port to host, and vice versa.

eclecticpassions,

@danct12 Yeah I also read they're going to clear the backlog... to be honest I can find retail price Rpi4B 8gb rev. 5 but not rev. 9. I think I'll wait a bit longer (October time) to get the latest version. I don't work in IT so everything is very new to me. I'm interested in self-hosting / home lab projects so I'm hoping to learn enough to do that!
