A short history of the ASUS Eee PC and netbooks.

I never got one because, although cool, the limited use I'd have done wouldn't justify even the affordable price as I had no mobility or form factor needs.

@amoroso The initial EeePC was pretty cool. It was one of the few laptops at the time with full support for Haiku operating system including wifi.

@istvan Did it support Haiku from the start? Really cool.

cpgsaw,

@amoroso @flargh loved my netbook. Had an MSI Wind so I could turn it into a hackintosh. Used it religiously in grad school for taking notes in coursework

@cpgsaw What's an MSI Wind?

@amoroso I still have my 701 in good condition, nowadays running Haiku.

@felix Pretty cool.

@amoroso I had one of those first 7" netbooks. It was really durable and the size was very convenient while in school. I even wrote a lot of code on it.

Batteries and throttling were not as good back then, so the battery life was only around 2-3 hours IIRC. Would love a modern version with 8+ hour battery life.

@dvshkn Did you use it with Linux or Windows?

dvshkn,
@dvshkn@fosstodon.org avatar

@amoroso linux - wiped the stock OS and installed debian

@amoroso I used one as my daily driver and it worked wonders, I loved that super portable size. I even managed to run mac os x on it lol

@loop0 Did you use it with Linux or Windows?

@amoroso I bought a netbook as a broke college student. I thought netbooks were going to be the hot new thing, but I was definitely wrong. I still have mine in a closet but I’m not sure what I can use it for.

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@SeasonsChange Was it adequate for daily use?

mnemonicoverload,

@amoroso
I never ended up getting one either. By the time they came out my laptop was only 4-ish years old with plenty of life left in it and I also had a Sony Clié PDA with a very usable folding keyboard dock so my ultra mobile needs were already covered too.

@mnemonicoverload It sure looked cute. With a price closer to an impulse buy I would have gotten one just to play with it.

mnemonicoverload,

@amoroso
The one that really appealed to me was the Sony netbook (Vaio P series) with the really wide screen and that was even less of an impulse buy price, unfortunately.

@mnemonicoverload Definitely a premium device.

@amoroso Oh the memories I have of the brief era! https://youtu.be/ffg6CpPcRWU?si=8Z7tVOOKplfu0-y_

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@kevinctofel It looks pretty small, basically a Nexus 7 with a keyboard.

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@amoroso That’s about right. Battery was in the hinge to keep it thin. I used that exact device to cover CES two years in a row because it was super portable by comparison to most devices at the time.

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@kevinctofel How was battery life? Was it enough out there in the field?

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@amoroso It was enough for about 2.5 to 3 hours of use so you had to work quickly! Eventually some of these had extended batteries to double the run time and I had a few of those as well. That was the nice thing: You could pull the battery pack and replace it with a fresh one if you had a spare.

@amoroso I got one from Woot, IIRC. I still have it, though it's just in the pile of antique crap that I hold on to for some reason. It was a neat little machine. I ran Window 7 on it, and used it as a travel machine.

amoroso,
@amoroso@fosstodon.org avatar

@joeygibson Was it usable with Windows?
