On Reddit and Its Federated Alternatives, Lemmy and kbin via Jayeless. https://www.jayeless.net/2023/06/on-reddit-and-alternatives.html

If Lemmy is not your cup of tea as an alternative to Reddit, maybe try open-source federated Kbin instead

Yes, Reddit is going through its own API pains right now, and of course it is anyway a centralised social network much like Facebook and Twitter. So the discussion around alternatives has been coming up again.

Lemmy has been around for a while, its technol ...continues

catching up on the little reddit to lemmy migration thats happening and so cool to see all sorts of people joining the fediverse not even realizing it. that they can be followed and interacted with by the whole fediverse and not just lemmy is the most striking part of this situation though this is like a side note or added feature in a list of "reddit alternatives"

schizanon,

@liaizon I have created accounts on #kbin and #lemmy, and although I have followed both of them with my #calckey and #mastodon accounts and vice versa, I don't feel like I am seeing any of my activities with one on the other.

Is it me... or is #Mastodon really quiet these days?

dragfyre,
@dragfyre@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@liztai getting quieter on the whole, but there's actually a lot of buzz happening on a wider variety of #fediverse platforms. #Calckey and #Misskey have gotten a lot of attention lately, as have #Lemmy and #kbin. #Pixelfed has had some major updates lately too.

WIth Reddit self-destructing, many have been wondering about alternatives on the Fediverse.

I do NOT recommend Lemmy. I have serious long-standing deep concerns about the developers, see here: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106835057054633379

As far as I know, nothing has changed since then and Lemmy's issues remain.

Alternatively there's Kbin (https://kbin.social & https://kbin.pub) which seems less problematic. Regarding cryptocurrency issue: https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fediparty/pulls/97#issuecomment-663170

Is there a #libre #federated #Reddit #alternative out there? If yes, what would be its name? TIA!

So, after Reddit- it looks like it's time to try Lemmy? I haven't joined an instance yet though I've been looking around. Also, is there a way to see all posts from different instances at once? That might be a naive question but I can't really tell from browsing instance views.

#lemmy

chillicampari,

or maybe #kbin

does it all work together (it seems like it should)?

A small thing, but it makes me happy. It's fake at the moment, but the icon is already waiting for to reach version 1.0

Velveteen, to kbin

I made an account on #kbin and it's pretty cool. Turns out reddit is good if you take all the redditors and reddit staff out of the equation.

Seems like is having a bit of a twitter moment with users jumping ship to and recently. Welcome to the Fediverse :fediverse:

For those who are unaware, lemmy and kbin to a lesser extent are in the early stages of a rapid growth in users, similar to the one Mastodon experienced in November last year.

In a move similar to Twitter, Reddit has all but confirmed that 3rd party apps will be locked out with their new API pricing, effectively forcing people to use the official app or nothing.

That has driven a lot of people to look for alternatives. I expect the wave in new users will ebb, but it will surge back again even larger once the 3rd party reddit apps are officially unusable.

We live in interesting times on the fediverse

How do @ernest and @nutomic coordinate the specs for & to be able to talk to each other?

is there like a super awesome meeting or forum both go to? :O

can be really useful, but let's not forget and exist.

caos, to fediverse in Looking for an entry to the Fediverse that's made for a single user. Preferably Reddit/Lemmy-like.

@butter Most software in the Fediverse is not topic-centred like #Lemmy , but account-centred.
The best known alternative to Lemmy would probably be Kbin . According to #FediverseParty, there are Moontree, Lotide and brutalinks, which is from @mariusor

Learned a cool thing about the interaction between #Lemmy and Mastodon. You can follow a Lemmy community on Mastodon and reply to posts and comments with your Mastodon account. Other replies in the community also get boosted by the community account.

I'm trying #kbin . I followed your lemmy account from there. I think it's you 😂.

matthieu_xyz, to fediverse

It’s getting closer and closer. Soon enough groups from #mastodon, channels from #calckey, magazines from #kbin and forums from #discourse and #flarum will all talk to one another.

This is still early, but very exiting.

Upvote vs like

Graphics/UI and #ux are one side of the project, UX that is combined with functionality and design is a slightly different story. Looking at the project from the beginning I was wondering about the sense of mixing upvotes and likes. Of course, I know that this from the functionality of federated applications, but also in them...

I've had a few days playing around with kbin now, and I really can't say enough good things about it!

It's still very early beta, but it aggregates groups from friendica, gup.pe and chirp and handles them in a smart interface. It also has dedicated reddit like groups (called magazines) that are cross compatible with lemmy. And best of all, you can set up Calckey like antenna for each magazine. This means that not only can you see content explicitly posted to the magazine, but there is a separate tab for content automatically aggregated from the wider fediverse

I've already created a bunch of magazines simply because there aren't many there yet, but I look forward to handing them over to other people once the userbase grows

@ernest, what an amazing platform you're developing!
