Since the #reddit rebellion has been quashed and things have gotten quiet. I have been tossing around the idea of setting up a #lemmy#instance for #Fandom to share links and stuff like the old days of reddit.

A question for #Mastodon#instance#Admin people. If I was to put my instance onto a local PC, what else would I need to arrange, I suppose just some form of DDOS protection is all?
I've had several people either private message me or ask me why I've been so absent from Mastodon over the last few weeks or so, and today, I think it's time to update all of you as to why.
When I first came to Mastodon, it was super fun, super awesome, everyone was super nice and there was little to no drama or toxicity.

Was talking with someone about the perceived complexity of mastodon and one of the main problems seemed to be the various servers running the software were called instances. I asked that would they be interested in joining the Mastodon UK art community? And there was a positive reply so I think we should rename instances to communities, that is what they are after all. @mastodonmigration#mastodon#instance#community
Are there any other instance admins out there that have made stickers for their instance and if so, are you willing to trade some with someone like myself who has stickers for #AllThingsTech

That's good to know and very interesting. That means, there is no easy way to find out, how "complete" the search on your #instance may be, right?
For anyone looking from the outside maybe the number of peers of an #instance is at least an indicator?
And as admin you can see the number of accounts "in the cache" for each instance: That's complete, right? But just individually – there is no sum. At least not in the WebUI?

A search on your #instance goes only through accounts, "your instance knows".
That's more than the sum of all accounts in the #fediverse, that are followed by someone on your instance, but less than all the accounts on all #instances with accounts, that someone on your instance follows.

I'm #writing this for those who are used to their #feed filling itself. That's not the case here and for me that's a good thing. The feed doesn't have to be overwhelmed with #nonsense that some #algorithm assumes you care about.
