Trail work for a change. Noticed some "missing teeth" on bridges we biked yesterday so did my best to patch them up. Also cleaned up downed trees and widow makers. Details in the Alt.

This bridge has been falling apart for a couple years. I spend time replacing boards, maybe reinforcing a rotting slat, then next year come back and do it again. Not a really popular trail, so it doesn’t get much traffic.

from sunset at Dog Mountain a few days ago. The hills are alive with the sound of balsam root jumping around! Mainly because it was pretty windy! Also around were paintbrush here and there, lots of cow-parsnip(?) and occasional chocolate lily! Seems like the lupines are finished for the season.

Bright yellow sunflower-like balsam root in the lower foreground, a bunch of long stalked white cow-parsnip(?), and trees in the background with blue sky visible through the branches.

Chocolate Lily, aka checker lily, aka Fritillaria affinis. Small flowers that have a kind of mottled texture of dark red with yellow sprinkles.

More #Sunset #hiking on Dog Mountain.. Sunset appropriately had some sun dogs! Mt. St. Helens (aka Lawetlat'la) trying to grab attention from the combined might of the sun and the balsamroot.

Just after sunset on the trail down from Dog Mountain. Steep slope with lots of balsam root, and an orange-blue sky in the distance. Mt. St. Helens also way off in the distance.
The sun setting. Horizontally streaking clouds reflect the sunlight, and a zigzagy mountain line along the bottom waits to eat the sun.
After sunset, a darkening orange sky, with a pile of rocks along the trail, along the steep slope, still with abundant yellow balsamroot. You can also see Wind Mountain off to the left at mid-distance.

@enog I love the red wing blackbirds! We have lots here. They are very aggressive if you're near their territory. Basically, if you're smaller than a lightweight aircraft - they will try & challenge & drive any perceived threat away. I've seen them team up & go after mature bald eagles before. They are little in size but immensely brave. Super tough, defensive fighter birds!

Yes, he was very aggressive, getting really close to me, making a lot of noise😉 especially when I was walking. When I stopped moving, he became less aggressive 🤔

Here she is!

Marden Stone Circle. Built in the Neolithic age. I just marvel at the age of these structures and who stood here and decided Yep. Good place to whack some stones up I reckon!

This is the largest circle on Dartmoor at 38m. Although only a handful of stones remain, it's still impressive, and the view across to Dartmoor is astonishing.

Birds dart through the gorse. The air is still.
