The “ Eye of God” or The Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) is a planetary nebula located in the constellation Aquarius, at about 650 light years from the Earth.
The blue-green glow in the centre of the Helix comes from oxygen atoms shining under effects of the intense ultraviolet radiation of the 120 000 degree Celsius central star and the hot gas.
The Crescent Nebula (NGC6888) lies in the constellation Cygnus the Swan. This “cosmic bubble” in space owes its striking appearance to a central Wolf-Rayet star that pushes the hydrogen and oxygen atoms outward. The interaction is so energetic that it also produces X-rays. The Crescent lies some 5,000 light-years away and measures about 25 light-years across.
Glacial rivers from the Tasman Glacier at Mt Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand. A glacial river is a river that originates from the melting of a glacier or ice sheet.
New Zealand is filled with beautiful slot canyons with rushing blue waters and ferns hanging from cliffs. Wilsons Creek in the Haast Pass area—rated as one of the top 10 classic canyons in New Zealand—is a deep schist slot gorge, more than 800 metres in length. In places it’s no more than three or four metres wide, with fluted bedrock towering 80 metres overhead and numerous turquoise pools.
A river rushes through a fern-filled jungle in southwest part of New Zealand's #Fiordland. Carved by glaciers over 100,000 years the landscape is one where waterfalls cascade hundreds of metres into deep black fiords; where ancient rainforest clings to mountains and where shimmering lakes and granite peaks look as they did a thousand years ago.
#Fiordland is one of the most dramatic and beautiful parts of New Zealand. Carved by glaciers over 100,000 years the landscape is one where waterfalls cascade hundreds of metres into deep black fiords; where ancient rainforest clings to mountains and where shimmering lakes and granite peaks look as they did a thousand years ago. Fiordland National Park is a World Heritage Site.
The Triangulum Galaxy, also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy 2.73 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Triangulum. It is catalogued as Messier 33 or NGC 598. The Triangulum Galaxy is the third-largest member of the Local Group of galaxies, behind the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way.
This sapphire blue crystal ice cave is located in an outlet glacier of Iceland's largest ice cap, Vatnajökull glacier, called Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Vatnajökull glacier is Europe's largest ice cap by volume.
