11 adults and 3 dogs rescued from the Sespe River Trail on Saturday, March 30th.
"The recent storm over the weekend caused major impacts to the Sespe Trail in the Los Padres National Forest. Rain caused water levels in the Sespe River to rise quickly leaving hikers stranded in harsh conditions. Ground units from the Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department were unable to safely access the areas to lead the groups to safety. Two separate rescue helicopters were dispatched to the area. "
Offline most of today, teaching Wilderness First Aid. I think I'll have all the students stand outside in the rain while discussing hypothermia, so we can see some actually symptoms! (just kidding). #firstaid

Beside the beautifully #handmade toothbrush cover 🪥 we also can mention the toothpaste tabs from Lush. We are very content with their taste, cleaning ability, and compact size. At the Lush shop in Dubai, we were giftet with mini creams. The tattoo cream is from the tattoo shop where we got inked. The Dr. Hauschka quince cream, was a gift from Jacqueline. Our sunscreen of choice is the Swiss Solio Solar 7. Sidenote: Marc prefers to cover his head and face with a turban than using sunscreen and dealing with sweating, reapplication, etc. The Weleda Skin Food lip balm is the one Fiona needs when she has cracked lips. Its funny how much cream we have. Normaly we don't carry much skin cream as we even didn't used it back in #Switzerland. Are you surprised to see baking powder in the middle of our #toiletries? We use it as deodorant. In cases of too much stress our sweat starts to smell. With only a fingertip of baking powder (natron), the odor gets neutralized. We seldom use our solid shampoo, and conditioner, preferring to shower with water and use the juice of half a lemon 🍋 as #conditioner.
The lavender soap bar we use for hand and clothes washing 🫧 Each of us has its favorite size of nail clipper. The comb and four 'LastSwab' Q-tips we share. Fiona has to carry menstruation cups and uses wax strips to get rid of her body hair. Oops, we forgot, Marc's carries an electric beard trimmer 🪒 with a self-modified charging plug. And last but not least, we come along with microfiber #travel towels and washcloths.
Our #firstaid kit contains only the really basic essentials. Till today, we needed nothing else than desinfection spray, plaster 🩹, gauze compresses, tape, painkillers, influenza pills 💊 eye drops, magnesium, and homeopathic globules. If something special was needed, we went to a local pharmacy to get the right medicine for that case ⚕️ Fiona carries Bricanyl with her due to her past asthma issues, but only needed to use it twice. #travellifestyle
Practicing what you need to do for altitude sickness is amusing when TWO students have gotten altitude sickness or dealt with that emergency in the exact place which you have in your scenario. (Palm Springs Tram). Always great to hear how they managed the situation (or did not). #FirstAid#WildernessFirstAid
My husband has had two heart surgeries and is on a blood thinner. Even a little cut bleeds much more than you can imagine! So I’m headed out to learn how to “stop the bleed” this morning. Hoping I don’t faint. 😅
A bit late, this was sent out earlier this morning in Honolulu.
PORTUGUESE MAN O WAR ADVISORY

Box jellyfish is actually highly, highly venemous. Per UC Irvine Department of Emergency Medicine:
"They are even deadlier than cobras (Brinkman, 2015). Box jellyfish sting symptoms are venom-dose dependent and range from mild local pain to death. Their sting can also cause Irukandji syndrome, which causes a complex sequela of symptoms that could manifest as hypertension with later hypotension, trembling and extreme pain. Pulmonary edema or intracranial hemorrhage are also possible"
Question from one of my first aid students: is it okay to keep a first aid kit in a car? Answer: YOU BET! In fact, you should absolutely have a first aid kit in your car Just remember to rotate the things that can't handle heat frequently (ie alcohol swabs rarely last more than a year for me, and medications exposed to very hot conditions need to be changed out more frequently too). #firstaid
Teaching tip: wilderness first aid students consistently fail to detect small plastic snakes (which replicate the dangers of something like a baby rattlesnake). Great training aid! #teaching#snakes#firstaid
Report from one of the students of my wilderness first aid class this weekend, that he realized how useful it was to take the class already: one of his hiking club members apparently had a heart issue yesterday (on a hike he was not on) and ended up airlifted to the hospital. #firstaid#preparation#hiking
Fun to have a wilderness first aid rescue close by to my wilderness first aid class. (6 patients airlifted off the western Santa Monica Mountains, with around 3 with heat exhaustion/heat illness). Wasn't able to have the class hear the entire call, as I was having them do a simulated wilderness first aid incident involving a similar mass casualty-type first aid situation, LOL. #firstaid#WFA
Me: "Yes, some woman recently died of rabies after being bitten by a cute little puppy in India"
Student: "HEY! That happened to me! I went to a temple in India, and there were all these cute puppies everywhere, and I got bitten! I had to get a full series of rabies shots, my professor said I'd die if I didn't!"
Likely I will be conducting an open Wilderness First Aid (WFA) class in the Conejo Valley (Thousand Oaks, California) area sometime in the next two months. If you are interested, let me know and I can fill you in on details as I figure out times. It will be two Saturdays, cost will be $100 per person. Waiting on confirmation from the group which would be hosting the class location. #FirstAid#WildernessFirstAid#class#WFA#hiking#backpacking#outdoors#ConejoValley#VenturaCounty
