Question from one of my first aid students: is it okay to keep a first aid kit in a car? Answer: YOU BET! In fact, you should absolutely have a first aid kit in your car Just remember to rotate the things that can't handle heat frequently (ie alcohol swabs rarely last more than a year for me, and medications exposed to very hot conditions need to be changed out more frequently too). #firstaid

@ai6yr That is solid advice esp rotating out stuff. That in reality is the hardest part to keep track of. I used to do that when I changed smoke detector batteries but with the new 10 year ones I have changed that.

GLOVES, GLOVES and more gloves.

Lemniscate,

@cvvhrn @ai6yr What I ended up doing with my car emergency bag was having a section of the contents list marked for perishable items (incl. headlamp batteries etc), setting up a recurring reminder on my calendar, and then checking that section for swap outs. I also used an insulated food jar to hold some stuff like the sunscreen tube that I didn’t want getting as hot.

@Lemniscate @cvvhrn great idea!

@ai6yr Here in #Minnesota, I have the opposite problem: Needing to move some of my first aid kit out of the car in the winter time to stop things from freezing.

(Should I need to use it; having to wait to thaw out the naloxone would not be great.)

@michael_w_busch oh yeah... different problem!

@ai6yr
Years ago I went out with a nurse. She owned a little hatchback. The small boot had a first aid kit, but also a large plastic tub full of triangler bandages, roller bandages etc. In case she came across a bad accident and needed to stop massive bloodloss.

@SuperMoosie The best folks to have an accident near are paramedics and EMTs, generally. They generally have a full trauma kit, LOL.

@ai6yr I can't remember last time I checked my car first aid kit, so I should probably get on that. How long do glow sticks stay working?

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@mjausson Glow sticks last quite a long time...

Teenage daughter's conversation today about Xmas present wishes:

Defibrillator
Pulse oximeter
First Aid kit.

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@SuperMoosie @ai6yr Defibrillators are pricy!

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@mjausson Very, very pricey -- I think $1800+. PulseOx is a good thing and affordable.

SuperMoosie,

@ai6yr @mjausson

Yep. $1700 plus Aud is about cheapest.

Or CellAED - $360 plus $200 per year subscription. One use, " free" swap it out if used.

She has been practising cpr since she was 9. surf lifesaver, started training for advanced resus currently (defib plus oxygen) and completed the standard workplace recognised first aid course today.

@SuperMoosie @mjausson Well, future paramedic or ER doc you have there (take it from experience, LOL)

@ai6yr Which is why I keep my first aid kit in a small "ice chest" in the car. It moderates the temperature swings significantly and extends the time the supplies last.

@ChuckMcManis @ai6yr By ice chest, do you mean something like an insulated cooler? Like an Igloo or something like that?

ChuckMcManis,
@ChuckMcManis@chaos.social avatar

@tiamat271 @ai6yr That is exactly what I mean.

tiamat271,
@tiamat271@mastodon.online avatar

@ChuckMcManis @ai6yr Great, thank you for responding! I frequently assume that I need to get “fancy/official” (i.e., expensive) things for emergency preparedness, and it’s really helpful to know that everyday/household items can often do the job too. Appreciate the tip!

@ChuckMcManis @tiamat271 ooh, extra points for putting it in Github, LOL
