If you are a homeowner and are insured by State Farm, Ohio Mutual, Pure Insurance, Westfield, and maybe Nationwide, you can get a FREE device to monitor your electrical system for arcing (one of the causes of house fires). h/t @w8emv

Scrapping furniture safety regulations will cost dozens of lives year, warns fire union

With current rules manufacturers must submit furniture to independent flammability testing - estimated save 50-70 lives year

#Tory government has proposed scrapping these rules in favour of a voluntary regime.

Remember while the sun is low be careful of magnifying mirrors. They can focus the sun and start a fire from across a room.

Caught this just as it ignited thanks to my interconnected smoke alarms. If we weren't home just now our house would have burned down 😨 #firesafety #winter #sun

This morning's home project: retrofitting the bird-sized eave vents with intumescent, fire blocking vents. Missed a bunch the last time around, only noticed it when I got access to the interior space they are connected to. Wildfire risk mitigation.

First step, remove the mesh I had stapled in place. Lots of staple holes, and maybe a few staples. #firesafety

After installation, which involves caulking on the outside of the retrofit vents and sliding them into the holes. You have to make sure not to fill the grates, but have enough caulking to block insects and embers from sneaking past. #firesafety #retrofit

The Fire Brigades Union has sent a pre-action judicial review letter over plans to house asylum seekers on the Bibby Stockholm. It
states that the Home Office has failed to arrange fire drills for asylum seekers or adequate risk assessments of the barge, despite more than doubling the number of planned occupants, creating an ‘inherently unsafe’ situation https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/aug/27/braverman-plan-to-house-uk-asylum-seekers-on-bibby-stockholm-barge-faces-legal-hurdle

Good to see eucalyptus trees getting cleared near the Claremont Hotel (the largest wood-frame structure west of the Mississippi, in a high fire danger area). Before: via Google Street View, after: this morning. #FireSafety #Eucalyptus

A photo from this morning, showing much of the eucalyptus stand removed. An orange sign in the foreground reads, “Tree work ahead,” and there are tree pruning trucks in the background. The view through the trees is much clearer.
