@counteractor@jdp23 there's merit in sticking to your lane when it comes to deciding what kind of app you want to be. You can do all things kinda crappily, or do a few things really really well.
Some quick examples:
NodeBB is a forum first, and a chat second (chats were replacements for older forums' DM systems)
#Discord and #Slack started building out threading/forum-style functionality. Arguably, it leaves much to be desired.
I really do wonder whether I’m too Millennial for #Discord.
Like, whenever I revisit one of the servers I’m on that I haven’t looked at for weeks or months, Discord will be like “new mentions!” in the channel list, and have red number badges next to channel names, but clicking them just takes me to the channel and there doesn’t seem to be a way to see these mentions (which are most likely just @everyone). The “inbox” on the top right also doesn’t show mentions older than 7 days. 🤷♂️
I want to get back into teaching #music. Especially #bassguitar. That's why I made a little thing. It's still in German only but will add an English version if people are interested 😸 #basshttps://raichoosbassstudio.de/
That being said: I already created a bi-lingual #Discord server for German and English speaking #bass players. I know there are already plenty out there but I really want to make this one about playing and practice rather than being overly focused on gear. Gear is fun but I gets more attention than it should. Come and join if you would like to be part of such a community! #bassguitarhttps://discord.gg/TZsKBcFb
@mae I used to love #Discord, but now I hate it because of shit like this. People use it as a complete replacement for the internet. Yeah sure, let's put everything in the hands of this one company, it'll be fine.
>"we have found a solution to discord discrims being slightly confusing to ppl who think 4 numbers are too confusing"
>ooh boy I'm excited to hear about how they retained the ability for people to identify as their name instead of shoving funny numbers or characters on the end
@tupper Discord has moved from being a simple and fast gaming communication tool to an everything-community-social-networking-app. And you can tell whoever their investors are slowly wants to see they can make money with it.
And they also trap decades of human knowledge never to be found by search engines.
I understand the reason for this - organization and coordination are difficult tasks. And the team responsible for resolving conflicts should not itself be a source of misunderstanding and conflict.
For this purpose #discord is a very useful, but flawed tool. And alternatives (e.g. #Matrix, #IRC, #Email and #Jitsi) have their own issues - some are just down to network effects, others actually lack features making them less useful for coordination.
"Infuriating! #Yahoo News tries to tar and feather Mastodon with Discord! Yet, this article is wrong on so many counts!
#Discord is not "distributed". It is a centralized and proprietary service run by Discord Inc. -- who have dropped the ball on moderation."
#Mastodon is decentralized and open source, and individual server admins are very active with #moderation. We put lots of effort into reporting...illegal material."
Server Experiment: Guild Member Safety Experiment (2023-05_guild_member_safety_experiment
There is now a Member Safety tab! It shows your all members with their names, nicknames/display names, server join times, account ages, joined invite links, roles (only hoisted ones), flags. Also, there will be some quick action soon!
Spent the last half hour fighting with Discord. There's an essay to be written on the centralization of the corporate web: Reddit destroying forums, Discord killing forums and IRC, etc. My login wouldn't work and then the password reset wouldn't, and this, people tell me, is better than what we had before. I only use this because it's what other people are using. The story of the last fifteen years, I guess. #Discord
Users with the Moderator Program Alumni badge can now choose a Pomelo username. If you have said badge, you might need to reload your client to get the popup, though it seems like the rollout is taking a bit, so maybe try reloading every 5 minutes if you don't see the popup immediately
Thank you discord for making their platform like everything else, now if you have a rare tag, you will be hunted down until you give it to an even more extreme level than twitter! OH I almost forgot how people will now try to get into partner accounts and secure rare usernames as well since those accounts are one of the first to get the tag system! Thank you discord. Very cool.
If you think you will be a target, turn off SMS 2FA in case of sim swapping, set DM spam filter to all DMs and make sure you stay aware because scams are going to show up exponentially.
If you think that they will turn back on it, dream on. This came from the co-founder so unless there is a full blown riot, they will move forward.
Note, even if you turn on the 2023-03_pomelo (this allows you to see the popup to claim your username) experiment, it will not let you set your username. I HIGHLY recommend that you do not do this because you might miss the actual prompt to claim your username.
"People trying to use Discord are being asked to identify an object that does not exist. The object in question is a "Yoko," which appears to be a kind of mix between a snail and a yoyo. Multiple people have reported seeing a prompt to identify a Yoko when asked to solve a simple captcha prompt while trying to use Discord. The picture of the Yoko, as well as the other images in the captcha, appear generated by AI."
