Reminds me of a story back in 2017, when a flaw in encryption was found in WA and they replied with "it's not a bug, it's a feature" - and in response, my friends and I decided to add PGP encryption to WA Web as a hackathon project :blobfoxlaugh:
#WhatsApp is so sketchy when restoring backups. It claims to need access to contacts, audio, video, and pictures in order to search for backups on Google Drive. Per https://faq.whatsapp.com/209942271778103/?helpref=hc_fnav&cms_platform=android, it needs to search for Drive backups in order to transfer directly from the previous phone. If you don't give it Contacts permission, it doesn't find existing accounts on your phone and embeds a Google login form inside of WhatsApp. But when you log in there, it knows that the account is already on the phone.
#Telegram scheduled messages have slowly allowed me to automate some pain points of my social life.
With them you can:
1️⃣ Send message when recipient opens the app,
2️⃣ Send message 'without sound',
3️⃣ Send message at X time in the future".
And it'll do all these, even if your phone is off (the message is queued on their servers). #WhatsApp likely can never do this due to their stupid security model (ie, worst of all words: broken e2e).
I wonder if someone ever analyzed the "mobile cost" (bandwidth, battery usage, ...) of messengers like #WhatsApp/ #Signal/ #Telegram, chat systems like #IRC, and maybe even more "exotic" chat systems like #mail, @delta -chat, #fedi?
