Many years ago, unable to sleep at a sleepover, I found a copy of Reaper Man sitting on a windowsill, so I read it. I was sold immediately, and bought every Terry Pratchett book I could get my hands on. New ones were still coming out regularly, so it was an exciting time. Happy !

To celebrate today, slip some Discworld technical terminology into your social media posts where appropriate:

generative AI = imp-powered

phones = dis-organizers

messages = clacks

kvetching about poorly designed things = blame Bloody Stupid Johnson

Happy birthday, Terry Pratchett, born 28th April 1948. I was in a B&B in Leverburgh, Harris, when the news broke of his death, and had to explain to the landlord why I was so affected, but Terry's books were some of my earliest influences. My very first "book" was pretty much an attempt at a Discworld-style universe. "Mort" is still one of my all time favourite books.

    The biography of Terry Pratchett by his long-time assistant Rob Wilkins, "A Life in Footnotes", is 99p today at Amazon and Kobo.

    It's interesting, surprising, funny, affecting, sad and extremely good

    Edit: apparently it's [ today, which explains the timing.]

    For me, the Guards books are my favourite and the way I got into BUT the Moist von Lipwig trilogy is also sublime.

    The scheduling gremlins have got us again - we’ve had to delay , our previously announced short story episode about “Hollywood Chickens" and “From the Horse's Mouth”.

    But we are embracing the chaos: our May episode will now be all about this year’s theme: “Start in the Wrong Place!”

    So if your first or novel wasn’t The Colour of Magic or the usual recommendations, tell us: where did you start?
