Friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse, for those who may not have heard, we recently lost Mike Karels - @karels - a truly significant figure in the history of our favorite operating systems. Among our BSD Cafe community, we have his niece - @kristin_charlotte
Let's show her family our warmth and gratitude for the role he played.
We're thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new course platform, designed to empower and connect our community through technology! 🌐

You have the site section of "Github Repositories" with a couple of entries there. However, in the text the hyperlinks aren't styled and can hardly be recognized. More importantly imho these pages should prominently link to the repo from where the text is taken, esp. for the ones that are #CCBY licensed.
Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse,
since December 2023, snac.bsd.cafe has been operational, initially in an experimental phase but has proven to be stable and reliable.
Thus, Snac2 is now available as a service of BSD Cafe. It is considered one of the best and most comprehensive "lightweight" implementations of #ActivityPub, offering one of the best ways to interact with the Fediverse without the need for the extensive dependencies and components of Mastodon.
It is now possible to request an account on the snac2 instance of BSD Cafe. There isn't an automatic sign-up process (snac2 does not provide one, as it wasn't designed to create large communities).

🎉 Django London Meetup is coming back and we're looking for speakers!!
Are you into technology, love Python, or Django? Do you have a talk or idea to share?
We want to hear from you!
Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse, as many of you may have read, #Threads has finally started experimenting with ActivityPub dialogues. Currently, it's possible to follow certain accounts, though interactions are one-way for now. Many admins are preemptively blocking their servers, defederating them from their instances.
After some thought, I've decided not to impose federation limits with Threads for the time being. We are a community of tech enthusiasts open to dialogue, so let's see how things unfold.
Of course, every user is free to mute or block, but I won't do so at the instance level for now. Should serious issues arise, I will mute the entire instance. Muting means their posts won't appear in your timelines unless you follow Threads users, but communication will still be possible for those interested.
A total block (defederation) is not currently an option I'm considering and will only be used in extreme cases. One such case might be if the federation remains one-way, i.e., if they decide to use Fediverse content without contributing anything useful or allowing interaction. But we'll see.
As always, I'm open to any opinions or suggestions.
Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse, today has been a Monday, and Mondays are always quite busy. However, I managed to reorganize the code of NotiMail to make it more suitable for packaging on various operating systems, and I have prepared and submitted the port for #FreeBSD for approval. As time permits, in the coming days, I'll do the same for other *BSDs and perhaps even create a simple Dockerfile. Meanwhile, I'm also diving deeper into #Peertune. Stay tuned!
