Since i am slowly migrating away from my setup towards bare metal setup and i do not want to let the syno go to waste, i decided to use it as a backup server with automounts for backup folders. Let's see how that goes.

I liked the syno at first, but since i cannot really configure it besides that what the DSM webgui provides, it is hard to get a nice setup going. Also the outdated kernel and some other stuff like not being able to install what i want sucks.

For any #Synology users. I want to back up my data to Backblaze B2 cloud. Hyperbackup is an accessibility mess, especially when choosing folders to back up. I've heard good things about Restic, but not sure how to set that up on Synology. Does anyone have any suggestions for something that works reliably and is accessible? Command line is ok.

Well, my rebuilt after a drive failure - and 2 days - ...so there's that! 😉

Catastrophic Raid5 loss at home. I had an array of 10 drives, 9 data + 1 parity lose 2 drives. It's a Synology SS1019+ with an external enclosure.

About 90TB in total, 90% full. Synology refuses to mount it. Drive errors galore in dmesg. I'm at a loss of what to do next.

I have a spare drive (all 12TB) just as a FYI, and am considering moving them all to a case I have with enough bays and to linux them into submission and try to recover something. But my MDADM foo is weak and the best I have is google right now.

I expect I'll spend most of today trying to recover a little before admitting defeat, RMA drives, and starting clean.

I'll admit I made many mistakes to get here. Only one drive parity, dumb. Not backing up when it told me, dumb. Not making sure everything I care about was in at least 2 places, dumb. And I had the gall to call myself "data paranoid"

If you're running a and you back files up to check your polling settings because the majority of my bill (admittedly not a large bill) was in "Class C Transactions" which were caused by my NAS polling B2 every 60 seconds

There's even a section on it on the Backblaze docs, but I didn't read as initially setting up Cloud Sync seemed straightforward

Took me a minute but I got Convos.chat's Docker container working with Synology Container Manager. I couldn't use the "Web Station" reverse proxy, I had to proxy manually using Login Portal > Advanced > Reverse Proxy.

Per the FAQ, you need these 5 custom headers, the last 2 of which enable WebSockets through the proxy:

  • Host: $host
  • X-Forwarded-For: $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for
  • X-Request-Base: $scheme://$host/
  • Upgrade: $http_upgrade
  • Connection: $connection_upgrade

Solution in the thread!

My Setup to allow an external SSL access via is complete broken (and this without any change). Now I played around a lot and I have no clue anymore.

I followed the doc from here: https://www.smartlab.at/secure-your-home-assistant-with-https-using-synology-reverse-proxy/

If I use the right protocol and port, the reverse proxy port-switch from HTTP(S) to the local app is working, but I get all time a ngix 404 error. And it's only working with the local IP.

If I use the sub-domain, I get a host not found.

My Homelab NAS on NixOS - Xe Iaso

"copying things off of a box's samba configuration file, I managed to trick everything into working and now all the machines on our tailnet can access the data on the NAS without too much trouble. Even iPhones and iPads thanks to the recent addition of SMB mounting on iP{hone|ad}OS. It also works over too, so I can get into the ' files anywhere I have an internet connection."

For those who have a , the latest update to DSM modularizes Storage Manager into its own package. In the release notes for the new Storage Manager package: "1. S.M.A.R.T. attributes are no longer recorded or displayed." This doesn't affect Smartctl via SSH, SNMP, or scheduling of SMART tests from the UI. It is, however, yet another reason to just build your own custom server. Synology is slowly but surely trying to make things a closed ecosystem.

Testing out #Synology #ActiveBackupForBusiness #apple #macos backed up data. Works like a charm.

In case you missed it, version 2.5+ of Active Backup offers macOS endpoint backup option.

Bare metal restore, including file/folder restore via #ABB Recovery portal.

OK, note to self: when you rsync backups to your Synology NAS, make sure you either disable the recyclebin or schedule empty-recyclebin jobs... Just cleaned up 7TB...

Installing a modern python version on a Synology safely to run a glorified cron job script is nigh impossible to do well.

No git, no GCC, no home folder, no-executables in /tmp folder... the bootstrap chain goes on and on.

I have had to do less bootstrapping installing Gentoo stage 2 than this. 😆

My lovely ds212j (nicknamed "Mitch") decided to die after almost 12 years of good service.

I still need a NAS, mostly as a backup space for my documents.

The Synology was great: super simple setup, super easy maintenance, great user support, etc. But I could maybe setup my own NAS...

Are there mini PCs out there that are inexpensive, with a 2 3,5" HDD bay and RAID1 support? Or am I better buying a new Synology device instead?
