Posted another blog post about getting #Bookwyrm ( @bookwyrm ) installed on my local Synology NAS at home. I used Cloudfare tunnels to bypass the port forwarding issue, and to make the SSL certificates easier to deal with. I’m still finding my way around Bookwyrm, but feel free to find me at https://books.cdrum.social/user/cdrum
Hmm. In my Synology Drive I setup a teams folder. Today I added some files to it but in the web interface they are not present. Teams folders are just share's you've added to Drive users to see.
I wonder if it takes time for new files to show up. That a scan process needs to happen in the background..
Webdav over an Apache reverse proxy is not fun. Stuck at a Multi-Status error mapping it in Gnome File Manager. Mapping to the internal IP/port works fine. Can't tell if this is #synology or #ubuntu.
I'm about ready to move on to a different solution.
TIL the #Synology Drive client for Linux does not support On Demand. I happened to look in its status dialog and saw it was syncing a lot of stuff and the folder had 300GB in it.
The Synology docs didn't even mention Linux, much less Ubuntu. Probably why I was surprised to even find a client on the download page
Anyway, investigating WebDav as a solution. Likely over VPN so I don't need to map yet another port directly from the internet. If I use VPN, then SMB or NFS is a solution too.
Day 11 in my google drive exit strategy. About 10TB remains in my copy from google. I've set up all the sharing on my Synology and have even shared things with multiple clients. No complaints yet on issues downloading. At best I expected a little mention on the potentially slower speed. But it has been quiet. #google#googledrive#synology#photography#videography
One of the things with my off Google Workspace migration was looking at different tools to replicate the experience. I've had a very under utilized NextCloud instance, and I discovered it's client now supports streaming files vs just syncing. Perfect.
Well, perfect if you like crashing, a lot. It was not happy with my no where near full list of files. It was doing weird stuff to my windows 11 system tray too. #nextcloud#synology
One thing I am trying hard to do is make sure my Synology is secure. I need to expose it to the internet for file sharing, so doing my best to lock it down. I wanna avoid quickconnect.to for now. I'm citing potential speed issues.
I'm considering looking for a cli tool I can run against it to also automate some of the folder sharing process. If anyone knows one.. #synology
Ok Google, I know you are busy, but can you at least be consistent with the download speeds? Geez. 30GB/s one minute and 5K the next.. #rclone#googledrive#migrate#synology#google
Taking another run at #obsidian for note taking and journaling. I've used it before but didn't really get to grips with it.
Tried using #synology notes but it seems to have an issue with #2fa and needs me to relink to my NAS os a regular basis. It also appears to store the data in a proprietary format so not ideal.
Obsidian on the other hand stores data as #markdown so essentially plain text - much better 😁.
Still using Synology to sync the data but much more ..... accessible now.
This morning I was graced with the following message on Google Workspace. Given that for the past year and a half I have been paying for an unlimited in storage plan, I was a little surprised.
As far as I know, nothing was sent to me that this change would happen. But now the equivalent plan on Workspace now has the added words that it is limited to 2TB.
For the past year plus now I have been building my workflow around this premise. I think it is an understatement to say I am upset. Upset enough that I am now going to migrate all of my storage off of Google, at least as much as I can. Considering I worked very hard for the past year to move all my photos from my gmail account to my workspace account, I feel a little disenchanted.
So then I went down the route of "how can I fix this with money". Would you believe there is literally no option via google for this? Want unlimited*? Sure, buy the Enterprise plan, have a minimum of 5 users (all paid for) and then request to increase your base storage to the size you need. Oh, and you can only request this every 90 days, no sooner. Oh, and you can be denied. Their love is coming with so many conditions.
I went from panic, to anxiety, to solve it any way I can, and finally to think it through. Even if I fixed this now, when is my next surprise coming.
I just purchased a new Synology with enough storage to accept my full archive on google drive. There are plenty of open source solutions to replicate all the things I use google for. I will miss my cloud backups. But I will not miss this experience.
@chrisonline While a welcome move with more attention to #docker solution from #synology, I still prefer @portainerio for more then one reason, even for a single docker host.
@Vivaldi I use Web Panels for two messengers, mastodon, syncthing, my #Synology NAS photo app, a Sudoku site, #Spotify, #shelly home automation.
I have two or three web panels that I don't use as actual panels, but I middle click them so they open as tabs in the background - which allows me to not use a bookmark bar.
I have also turned off the status bar and have moved the screenshot and page tiling tools to the lower end of the panel bar.
Small update on my custom #NAS project; Last week I officially factory reset the #Synology and have put it up for sale. Such a good feeling to finally be getting rid of that thing.
Last week I also got the #FractalDesign#PC case I had been waiting on a restock for, and I have transplanted the NAS over. Some final (SATA power) cables are expected to come in today so I can install the drives I used to have in the Synology. We're getting there!
The new #Synology#DSM72 release candidate has arrived! DSM 7.2 - 64551 brings all the features from the beta with a lot of new #security patches and updates for the various platforms and frameworks that the system is using.
First part of a new long term home project coming in. An #Ubiquiti PoE+ switch to power a small #Kubernetes cluster built using #raspberrypi nodes. Going to blog about every step once it has been completed. But it is going to be a few quarters long project doing bit by bit
#RabbitMQ#Synology Been iterating over that thing, and have been duping from traffic from the one running on my NAS to see how it works with more than one node: https://t.co/mDtpYwdG6n
