Being watched "could limit your desire to take risks or exercise free speech. Over the long term these 'chilling effects' could 'cool down' society."
I will take reporting on anything at all numeric by #SocialMedia , #Mastodon , and the #MainstreamMedia seriously when each post or article clearly states if an "average" or a "median" was used, and if it is average, what the skew and kurtosis are
folks, that last bit about [#skew and #Kurtosis is a lame inside joke ]
“It's time for the people to conduct what I want to call a ‘digital guillotine,’ a ‘digittine’ If you will,'” TikTok creator Rae said on Thursday, who posts under the handle ladyfromtheoutside. “It's time to block all the celebrities, influencers and wealthy socialites who are not using their resources to help those in dire need.”
"Their study surveyed over 1,700 participants in the US, revealing that anti-misinformation features increased users’ awareness of misinformation in social media; but did not make them more likely to share information on social media, or more willing to receive information from the platforms. Both trust and distrust coexisted in the participants, emerging as distinct features and not simply as opposite ends of a spectrum."
Mastodon Sprechstunde
am Donnerstag 23.05.2024, 19:30 Uhr!
Du bist #neu#neuhier auf Mastodon? Kein Problem!
#SocialMedia#USA#Twitter#Copyright#WebScraping: "A US district judge William Alsup has dismissed Elon Musk's X Corp's lawsuit against Bright Data, a data-scraping company accused of improperly accessing X (formerly Twitter) systems and violating both X terms and state laws when scraping and selling data.
X sued Bright Data to stop the company from scraping and selling X data to academic institutes and businesses, including Fortune 500 companies.
According to Alsup, X failed to state a claim while arguing that companies like Bright Data should have to pay X to access public data posted by X users."
#SocialMedia#MentalHealth: "Research on individuals also doesn’t support the belief that social media is driving mental health concerns. I recently published a meta-analysis of randomized experiments examining whether reducing social media time improves mental health. It does not. Put simply: It is not possible to make a causal claim that time spent on social media impacts mental health.
Some people might say “Aha, correlation doesn’t equal causation!” But it’s actually hard to find evidence for a correlation either. In a recent meta-analysis of correlational studies looking at screens including social media and smartphones, no correlation with mental health could be found.
As often happens with moral panics, the public have been presented with a case for effects that actually ignores considerable research evidence that we should slow down and consider other possibilities."
Ah, it finally hit me. When some of the folks here seemed to have been perplexed by people wanting to both post publicly, but still have some control over who can read/interact with their posts?
That's robots.txt. We just need a way to set robots.txt for each of our accounts.
The vibes on Threads have been shifted. The For you feed brings up negative and controversial posts. Unsurpisingly no such negativity exists on my chronological feeds on Mastodon.
