So today marks the 30th birthday of the venerable RiscPC by Acorn Computers! This modular machine is what started my special interest of computers, and what I have so many fond memories of using for a better part of the decade - I love the RiscPC so much!
I DID have a video in the works that I was going to release to mark this momentous occasion... However that (what I deem a) catastrophic failure of my RPC's video output a few weeks ago has made me miss this deadline, as I haven't been able to source a replacement motherboard in the time I had left. :distraught:
It's a shame as the "base edit" is SO CLOSE of being completed (LITERALLY just needed footage of 5 games), and I could definitely have done the refinements in the week leading up to today... It'll still get released some point this year; but won't quite have the same magic like it otherwise would... 🙁
Taking photos for my upcoming Acorn Archimedes A3010 article. Even with its slightly yellowed keys, it still looks amazing with those vibrant green function keys and Acorn logo.
Once I have found a good solution to capture video from the Acorn Archimedes that doesn't look washed out, I can finally get this article live on my website.
Hello! I'm Hazel, a queer foxgirl software developer.
I'm a transfem demigirl and I also describe myself as lesbian, although its a bit more complicated than that. I care deeply about trans issues, queer life, and other LGBTQ+ topics. DMs are open to anyone questioning their gender or struggling with their identity.
I also love programming as a hobby and I babble with retro-computing. I've got a particular fondness for 80s era computers, even though they're well before my time. There's just something fun about the unique and creative computer designs from that decade! I've got a Timex Sinclair 2068 that I especially love.
Some other things I like are PC gaming and TTRPGs. You'll often find me playing Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, or D&D 5th edition. I also love trying out indie games, so please tell me about your own!
My current passion project is ActivityPub Sharp - an attempt to build a static-typed implementation of ActivityPub with full support for spec-compliant and real-world federation. I also contribute to Letterbook with the hope of sparking a new generation of safer and more private fediverse software.
Feel free to start up a conversation about these or any other topics - I love to chat!
Atari had a video game Major Havoc, where a clone battled the evil Vaxxian empire located on Planet Maynard.
Entirely coincidentally, the headquarters of the producer of VAX supermini computers, Digital Equipment, was located in Maynard Massachusetts.
The pub located across Main Street from DEC’s Maynard Mill headquarters had a Major Havoc game for a while, too.
DEC used an addressing system that identified each site, building, floor, and pillar and mailstop within each DEC complex worldwide. Within the many buildings located in the Maynard Mill, the aforementioned pub self-allocated the next highest available building number for themselves, “becoming” (IIRC) MLO25; building 25.
Of course, various meetings were then held in building 25.
An image of mine showing a quiet evening in Maynard is included below.
The New Year is coming up, and we'll be in the final stretch of getting the first VCF SoCal booted-up. If you've thought of being an Exhibitor, now is the time to let us know! :)
I'm really struggling with the desire to buy an apple iigs. I'm not crazy about modern Apple but I love love love the apple ii series. Right now I need you to tell me how expensive and bulky a iigs is and how I can just emulate it if I really want to. #apple2#retrocomputers
