Hi all!
I'm Paul, a theoretical physicist currently based in Waterloo/Canada.
I work in combinatorics, graph theory, and renormalization of quantum fields. Effectively, that's half of the time pen and paper calculations, the other half C++ programming 😁! And another half is teaching calculus at the moment...
I did my #phd in Berlin, and my Bachelor's in the beautiful city of Jena.
In my free time, I do all sorts of other physics related things (it seems I have turned my hobbies into my job -- like the Pokemon professors back in the day). Currently, I am trying to get a Raspi-based ventilation system in a summer cottage to measure the amount of beverages present from the building's heat capacity.
Also, I like biking and hiking and dogs.
Someone asked a question about the problem of publishing "least publishable units" of papers, referred to by Michael Ernst as "salami slicing". I agree that atomizing a research process can be substandard, but there's another end of the spectrum... the Guiness World Record Sandwich of paper. So I made a meme to illustrate the spectrum 😅
wouldn't salami tactic use the "most publishable units" as in having the least amount of publishable content possible in each paper of the many papers?
Lying on resumes, in cover letters and job interviews is prevalent
Fast Company reporting on Resume Lab's Job Applicant Behavior Survey
“It’s disturbing,” says Stacie Haller, a career strategist at ResumeBuilder.com, an online resource for job seekers. “It has become acceptable in our culture to lie just to get what you want. Just turn on the TV. People are screaming about everyone lying.”
#introduction Bonjour, I'm Marc (a.k.a. "T0K_"), a #phd student working on #privacy -preserving technologies. Outside the lab, I spend my time playing #videogames and losing #ctf challenges.
With this account, I'll promote some of my academic work . I might also engage in stupid and vibrant debates about random geeky stuffs .
I'm not entirely sure yet what I'll do with this Mastodon account, so I don't exclude the possibility of some cat pics or even some shitposting
OK so what I WANT to write about (and may do in a separate paper) is this infantilising way women with a BPD Dx are treated as “silly girls”. Silly for self-harming, silly for complaining about services, silly for ODing, silly for taking “sexual risks”. They are not toddlers.
I think this whole #PhD is going to involve me doing my “proper” work and writing other articles on the side #PhDChat
Today is #FossilFriday & I got a reminder that last year this day my humans made #trilobite#cookies. It was for a colleague's #Phd defence pawty in the #geophysics department. The cookies were a huge success 😻😹
After 481 hours, I just finished my first story on #BaldursGate3. While working on my #PhD, I played the new Hitman, but not more complex #VideoGames, and nothing like this. I have never played a game like #BG3. I now understand the emotional attachment others have to these fictional characters. I like how well Larian replicated most aspects of the #DungeonsAndDragons rule system.
Though I can play it again with another character it won’t be the same story. Thank you Larian for the experience!
Notice to Female [#PhD students] This Monday, February 26: deadline for submitting your application for the #Prix Jeunes Talents France L'Oréal-UNESCO 2024 "Pour les #Femmes et la #Science". Good luck to all!
We shared our @digigeolab Lab Handbook this week. We have been working on our everyday research group practices for years.
We decided to make them public, and as @tuuli said "it is not rocket science, but we thought it might be useful for other research groups and upcoming PIs"
« Composer avec les technologies du web. Genèses instrumentales collectives pour le développement d’une communauté de pratique de designers graphiques »

My abstract for a poster presentation at this year’s main “personality disorder” conference has been accepted! This will be my first conference of my PhD outside of my own university. My department has conference poster printing facilities, I need to find out how to access them 🤔 #PhD#phdchat
Angela Borchers Pascual is a PhD student in the @maxplanckgesellschaft independent research group “Binary Merger Observations and Numerical Relativity”. She is working on understanding the imprint of gravitational kicks in the gravitational-wave signals emitted by merging black hole binaries.
