The massive surveillance stories did not used to make much sense to me. As I used to tell a schizophrenic client, "yes, computers might track what you are up to, but you have no reason to think that you are important enough for an actual human to pull that data out of a database and notice it. It's just buried in the giant data pool.". At the time, that worked some to reassure.
However -- now -- there is the computing power to actually utilize the data on every ordinary person. Or at least I think there is. AI is the bogeyman nowadays -- a stand-in for anything awful that could happen -- but someone COULD (and likely is) building AI systems vast enough, fast enough, and powerful enough to take all that tracking data to watch EVERYONE.
Then -- a motive is needed. In the past, the motive has merely been to serve-up advertising to people moving around the web. Yawn. The further bogeyman exists of state attorney generals accessing this data to see if women have been to abortion clinics out-of-state, or employers accessing the data to see if applicants are seeking cancer treatment -- but so far this has been mostly speculative. Now -- we have a story above and below of the Trump fascists teaming up with Oracle (a major database and AI player) to comb through social media to pre-screen 50,000+ hard-right applicants to swarm the Federal government once he seizes power. NOT much of a leap to assume that liberal left-leaning social media profiles are also being collected as we are referred to as vermin in his speeches. NOT much of a leap to assume that "illegal" alien social media profiles are being collected for people to seize for internment in the camps Trump promises to build.
One of the big problems with a post-truth society is not just that we are swamped with fake bullshit "information". It's also that absolutely anything becomes at least plausible.
Throwing a hail mary. Anyone I know working with php and oci8 for oracle? Just built two boxes following Red Hat instructions, one with php8 and one with php 8.1. Both using 'Oracle Instant Client', and can connect using sqlplus. No errors on building/loading php-fpm but both give the same error "undeclared function oci_connect()". I am not a php programmer or a oracle dba, just a stuck in the middle sysadmin. #monday#php#oracle
