What is the connection between fractal geometry and systems at a critical point undergoing phase transition? This is one of the more useful ideas that has emerged from the study of dynamical systems, but often it's buried too deep into the study of modeling for most people to encounter it-- then it gets explained badly in pop-science books.

At last here is a video that will set you right:

Un câble de 80 mètres (m) est suspendu au sommet de deux poteaux situés à 50 m du sol. Quelle est la distance entre les deux pôles, à une décimale près, si le centre du câble est à 10 m au-dessus du sol❓

nothing challenges the ethical facade of the institutions of knowledge more than the treatment of for the militant persistence of his dedication to , anti-imperialism, , and the general project of human emancipation. his outspoken opposition to the 's relation with the French military lead to a culture of expropriation of the results of his work, where a culture brewed in which it was open season to scower for bits to render transmisable for one's own credit, as he showed with meticulous detail throughout récoltes et semailles and other personal writings.

I think most of the difficulty I've had with learning #mathematics from books over the years has been notational polysemy (or abuse). Like, there have been (and continue to be) many times when I get hung up on an equation because I can't tell that it's a definition or a derivation or expansion that's just skipping intermediate steps, not to mention the times when an equation is actually a temporary initialization or assignment of value. Then, let's not even get started on all the nasty stuff folks get up to with matrices or eliding variables from an expression.

If I'm in a certain subfield, I can more often figure it out because I've seen the notation before, but it's still a pain.

Something for math geeks: "After 60 years of searching, mathematicians might have finally found a true single ‘aperiodic’ tile — a shape that can cover an infinite plane, but never make a repeating pattern."

I'm corresponding with an prison inmate who tries to read and share as much science as he can. From his latest letter:

"If I let another inmate read my magazine I will be given a ticket [demerit] for bartering and trading. I have been giving away my magazines for free to everyone for 17 years after I read them. I get 200-300 magazines a year sci biz tech stuff. Now I have to trade in my magazines to get more magazines and they just throw them away and no one else gets to read them."

Is there a crowd-sourced list of academics willing to help this way, organized by field or topic? Or a crowd-sourced list of inmates seeking academic help, organized by field or topic?

The hard thing about research #mathematics is knowing whether you're trying to prove something is true or false. I finally figured out that this one thing is true, after months of thinking I'd proved it false.

Now I owe my colleague two beers (one to make up for claiming it when I thought he was wrong).
