14:48 <@leah> gonna go home tonight
14:48 <@leah> and work on libreboot
14:48 <@leah> that is a fact, not a threat
idk why i found it amusing but i did so posting it here. from #librespeech just now
only tonight, because i'm working on minifree orders all weekend. not only am i the founder / lead developer of libreboot (free/opensource BIOS), i sell it pre-installed via this company:
@leah (#librespeech is a channel i run on libera irc, alongside #libreboot - #librespeech is the off-topic channel for #libreboot, where i send all the trolls, and we generally just banter/shitpost)
#Libreboot is a free/libre/opensource firmware project, replacing proprietary boot firmware on x86 & ARM platforms. Based on #coreboot, it provides an easy to use automated build system and installation procedure, with user-friendly documentation. 💪🆓
Today I managed to flash #libreboot to my (new-to-me, abandoned by #ChromeOS ) ASUS Chromebook Flip C101P. It's now able to boot postmarketOS from the internal eMMC (with fde!)
Another benefit of #Libreboot: sometimes you need it to use more open hardware, like an Atheros wifi card. The non-free Lenovo BIOS will sometimes just not run if it detects hardware it hasn't whitelisted.
If you want to build a freedom-respecting computer, do it in this order: install the Linux or BSD distro of your choice, then install Libreboot, and finally install the new wifi card if necessary.
2024-02-26 18:33:38 lorenzo i had went out of my way to buy that board, let you know about that this was what i wanted to do
2024-02-26 18:33:49 lorenzo i really wanted to see my name on adding this board
They literally said they wanted to see their name by adding the board. It feels quite selfish to me to snatch the work a new contributor was doing just because they are ‘taking too long’ without contacting them first.
Read the irc fully after writing that and it seems there was already communication between them, so it’s even weirder that such miscommunication occurred.
On masto the maintainer wrote that op was harassing them and gave the irc log for proof, but the irc chat is peaceful until the end where the maintainer flips out about the masto post and accuses op of harassing on masto??
The end of the irc log:
2024-02-27 05:04:04 leah you have 2 choices
2024-02-27 05:04:25 leah * stop going online and publicly harassing me - delete all posts about it. and i’ll delete my replies to your mastodon just now
2024-02-27 05:04:48 leah * stop contributing to libreboot - i will refuse all patches from you, and i’ll ban you from #libreboot if you even raise a peep
2024-02-27 05:05:02 leah i’ve tried to be nice but it ends here, and i will listen no further. i won’t have you harassing me.
2024-02-27 05:05:11 leah yield to my authority, or fuck off. it’s your choice.
2024-02-27 05:06:17 leah i could give in to you- whet you’re asking for is unreasonable, and the manner in which you ask is more like a threat than a request. if i give in to you now, you will try to harass/abuse me again in the future.
2024-02-27 05:06:27 leah it’s your choice now. submit, or fuck off.
It bites me that they call op harassing, threatening and abusive while threatening them of being banned if they talk publicly about it in the same breath. More adjectives from mastodon:
Your kind of bullying, coercive and controlling behaviour is unwelcome either in my life or in my communities.
Maybe ‘nagging’ could be an appropriate criticism, but the maintainer just looks out of it here. It’s also funny that they say “if i give in to you now, you will try to harass/abuse me again in the future” without realising that’s likely what op is also thinking at the moment
Haiku OS is cute and all, but I'm thinking about converting my Thinkpad back to Debian with a lightweight desktop.
I wanted to try to use Haiku as a daily driver, but it fell over when I tried to set up gmail on the default e-mail app. Everything was configured correctly, but only the folders/tags synced, not the e-mails.
Oh, that's neat. Reminds me of super-simple free webservers 24 years ago before everything went to Apache and later Nginx. I think I served a website off of my mom's Optiplex NT4 box for a while. I loved that machine and OS.
Simple is nice. :D
I haven't bare-metalled #Haiku yet, as #LibreBoot doesn't seem to like it, but it works off of a vm just great.
FF really doesn't respect ppls donations. They are Goo-funded. Scamazon and Cloud(G)lare work through them too. A few years ago Mozilla snubbed bitcoin donations. Their priorities are clear.
Projects that seem to respect ppl and/or seem to need support/volunteers, include #I2P, #gNUSocial, FSF, #Parabola (gnulinux), #libreboot.at, ForgeFed, #OpenWRT, DeCloudflare.
not for the faint of heart, but I finally managed to compile the rom for the dell6400 !!! Took a bit more than 2 hours, stopping several times to add things that were not on the pc (ADA compiler, recompiled and patch gcc backend, etc, and finaly a soft link to create python from python3 !!!)
if I go offline, replacing the BIOS didn't work and I bricked the PC 😉
Some people are just going too far with the hostile #fork culture, when there are more productive ways to collaborate on #libre software. What we've got here is failure to communicate with a fellow #FOSS developer. 😶
#GNU Boot people sending cease & desist to the maintainer of #Libreboot is so antithetical to their cause and only digging grave deeper for #FSF. #FreeSoftware and #trademark policies do suuuuuuch a good match, do they not?
But I also recognize that, maybe, @libreleah shouldn't have attempted to get #GNUBoot up to speed, at all? It's not like we're dealing with the brightest of the forks anyway. Just saying there are two sides to this story that I don't get completely. 🤔
A tale of 2 computers:
My ASUS #Chromebook Flip C302 was purchased in 2018, so is 5 years old, and I am now being told it is out of date with #ChromeOS updates, including security patches. Although there are some options, I am unsure exactly what I am going to do with it.
My #Alienware M15x A08 laptop was built and purchased in 2010, so 13 years old, and is currently running the very latest version of #PCLinuxOS including the current kernel. It's like the laptop that just keeps on going! #Linux
Guess who successfully flashed #libreboot on the t440p, repaired the LUKS partition (which I personally fucked up lol) and managed to make Wayland work UwU
