@helpers For the past few days i've puzzled over the fact that my browser ()) had stopped displaying for my account, despite me still having them enabled both in Floorp, & in . As Floorp had had an update several days ago, i began wondering if maybe the latest version might have broken its Notifications function. However today i eliminated that possibility by verifying that also my Vivaldi & browsers no longer give me my Friendica DN [&, like Floorp, they certainly used to]. So then i began wondering if maybe @alfred might have recently upgraded their server version of Friendica, & that said putative version was buggy. I decided it would be judicious to take a quick look at my Friendica account Settings, before posting a question about that.

Whoa! Well, i found the problem... but i do not understand how/why. Many months ago soon after creating this account, i had adjusted all my Settings to suit my preferences, & ofc one of those was to enable Desktop Notifications [otherwise, for months, i'd not have been receiving DN in all three browsers, til recently]. However, now, that setting had been lost, ie, it had reverted to default, ie, disabled.

Wtf? 😮

Now that i've re-enabled it, happily i'm once more getting my Friendica DNs. 🥳🎉

But... how on earth had that setting become disabled recently? 🤯 🤷‍♀️

After learning about and using Arch Linux on my ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 laptop for a little while, I can't say that it'll be a go-to Linux distro for me.

Installing Arch Linux using either the archinstall script as-is or customizing the install process harkens back to my early days of learning and using FreeBSD and OpenBSD. That part felt really nice and I do like being able to have a lightweight install without paring things out after the fact.

That said, trying to get things set up for my app dev needs was more painful than I would have liked. I did get pyenv and most other tools installed without any problems, but there are some AURs that aren't well polished.

One thing that I really liked about my time using Arch Linux was how easy it was to hop over to KDE Plasma 6 and use RC1 and RC2. I like the direction that KDE is moving with version 6. There are still some rough spots here and there. Looking forward to seeing KDE Plasma 6 make its way into other distros once it reaches GA and they are ready for Wayland across the board.

Heya! I'm Zak. A super casual gamer & musician from the Midwest. Bi as fuck and proud. 🌈

I daily drive Linux and play my Nintendo Switch a lot. I'm also obsessed with older hardware and retro tech. I'm a nostalgic nerd, honestly. Currently daily driving Arch + KDE Plasma!

Been watching wrestling for over 10 years and absolutely love WWE & AEW! I enjoy catching other events / shows, but mainly with friends if outside of those two promotions.

Not much left to say, really. I post a lot, so be warned! Hope you're doing well! :neocat_heart:

Earlier this week, after owning this laptop for like three or four months, I suddenly realized there was a PrtSc (PrintScreen) key, on the right side of the keyboard between alt and ctrl. I went to all this bother to set up screenshot hotkeys and I could have just been pressing the PrintScreen key the whole time. Note, the PrintScreen key doesn't do anything when I press it, but it's the principle

graphite,

@mcc @obot50549535 it launches a shotty old tool on windows iirc. On #KDEPlasma I made ot open spectacle

#Linux and #KDEPlasma is a massive boost to the desktop productivity experience. Instead of requiring a ton of third party, proprietary apps, a lot of the "regular" or even "not so regular" things I might need/want to do can be done directly from #Dolphin, the file manager (equivalent to #FileExplorer on #Windows, #Finder on #macOS).

From Dolphin, I could:

  • Convert documents and slides to pdf.
  • Convert annoying image (jpeg/png) receipts to pdf.
  • Convert images into any other image formats you'd need.
  • Resize images.
  • Combine multiple pdfs into one, or break one big pdf into multiple.
  • Rotate any images.
  • Combine any images (into a collage).
  • Convert pdfs into images.
  • Combine multiple images into a gif or video.
  • Access and use your Google Drive (or most other cloud drives) directly from Dolphin.
  • Compare the difference between multiple text-based files.
  • Send files to other devices using #KDEConnect.

Many more other things really on top of all of the other, more basic things you could do built into Dolphin like its amazing search feature, and the ability to compress/uncompress any formats including rar. I thought macOS was better at this vs Windows, but even then what macOS is able to do (from Finder) isn't even 10% of what Dolphin could. Also, Finder's insanely freaking slow, I'd actually take the ancient File Explorer any day.

Why wait for Microsoft to catch up with what we've been doing for decades?

Get Plasma, a modern, fully functional, clean, privacy-respecting, non-intrusive operating system now, regardless from where you live and ditch Windows for good.

forolinux,

@kde @kde I use #gnulinux and KDE, now #kdeplasma since "I don't remember when" years, before the existence of #fedora.
I use it at work, home, to play videogames, for everything, and I can only recommend them. Step forward, respect yourself, take back your freedom and give them a chance.

As of November 22nd 2023, my experience with #Wayland #KDEPlasma on #Nvidia GPU is still atrocious, while on #AMD is almost flawless ... Seriously thinking swapping my RTX 3060 in my secondary PC with RX 6600 despite expecting slightly worse game performance ... Screw Nvidia ...

Was curious to try #Wayland on #KDEPlasma on my desktop w my #NVIDIA GPU and happy to report that it's still crappy and broken as all hell :D Not surprised since it's also been crappy and broken on my other all #AMD systems, but on NVIDIA it's especially awful. Looks like I'll be stuck with #X11 for a really long time.

Use based browsers. Please.

MsDropbear425,

@odddev Oh, i should clarify this. If bells & whistles are your desire, pls ensure you install the "Stable" variant, & avoid the "Lightning" one. That latter one is crazy IMO; the Dev ripped out LOTS of the goodies 😱

My real :floorp: in my :archlinux: :kde: :plasma: Host, is that full Stable one, & it's fabbo. I did first explore it in some VMs before i changed my daily browser from :firefox_nightly:, & some of those experiments included using the version [i usually avoid FPs]. If users try to install FP Floorp via their distro's GUI app manager [eg, Discover in KDE Plasma], it only offers the sad sorry stripped-down Lightning variant. So, anyone determined to use FP, needs to install it via the FP website, then opt for the terminal method... coz that then lets you choose which of the two variants you want.

In my Host Arch, i just installed it as a regular pkg. I love it!

Good luck.

Welcome to my office workstation, #Fedora #Kinoite 39!

#Linux #KDE

MsDropbear425,

@vwbusguy Hi Scott. If you could shed light on this inconsistency for me, i'd be grateful.

In my :archlinux: :kde: :plasma: #ArchLinux #KDEPlasma Host i have upgraded my #Fedora #KDE & my #Kinoite VMs from 38 to 39. However, i did not get quite the same sausage out of the sausage machine, & it surprised me.

  • Fedora 39 KDE VM:

    • Kernel: 6.5.10-300.fc39.x86_64
    • Plasma: 5.27.9
  • Kinoite 39 VM:

    • Kernel: 6.5.6-300.fc39.x86_64
    • Plasma: 5.27.8

Shouldn't i have been able to expect Kinoite would emerge from the upgrade / rebase, wearing the same versions as "plain" KFedora?
