Does anyone know what this part of my food mixer is called? The white plastic bit has snapped and needs replacing, but I don't know what the part is called @repaircafe

I convinced my boss to set up @forgejo and evaluate it. We are very unhappy with and the current path we see. I already use forgejo for my private git. But a company has other needs, e.g. the actions and PRs.

I'm looking forward to see the outcome and hopefully switch to something better.

Security has been everything one could expect from the start. The risk of regressions that could lead to data loss not so much.

Fixing that endemic problem is the primary benefit of Forgejo becoming a hard fork. This is what changed my mind.

That does not mean Forgejo is 100% immune to regressions or dataloss. No software is. Only that the kind of regression that happened in summer 2023 can no longer happen.

If your branch has a good number of commits since it diverged from main, rebasing can sometimes seem like a Sisyphean task. Because each commit is applied independently, you often end up resolving merge conflicts again and again in the same places, conflicts that a merge would make you resolve together in one go.

To avoid that, I sometimes squash together all the commits in my branch before rebasing on top of main. But then of course I lose the structure of the separate commits.

For me, right to to repair isn't just about ewaste, and preventing corporate gouging.

It's about mental health. Being able to fix your gadgets is therapeutic. Empowering. Good for the soul.

In a world full of complex technology it's easy to feel small and helpless. And maybe I'm too much of an idealist, but I think that if everyone could experience the joy of fixing or modifying a gadget now and then we'd all be a little more open minded, a little more daring. A little harder to push around.

cazabon,

@futurebird A big ➕ to this.

When I was a kid, my dad had a late-1960s flip alarm #clock that became #unreliable, losing random amounts of time daily. He replaced it with a newish-at-the-time LED clock.

I went to the basement, took the flip clock apart, figured out how it worked, moved every moving part in it, and put it back together. Basically knocking the accumulated dust out of the mechanism "fixed" it.

I've been hooked on #fixing #things ever since. It's great.

The EU has adopted suggested rules put forward more than a year ago banning planned obsolescence and destruction of unsold goods.
