I will be removing @fedora 38 from the list of buildroots used in my cloud tools this evening (2024.05.14). Today is the release's EOL date, please migrate to or ASAP!

I am super impressed! The battery life on my #Framework laptop running #Fedora40 seems to be at least 130% compared to #Fedora39! 😍

💕 Kudos to @matthartley and the whole #Linux team at @frameworkcomputer, together with the @fedora community! 🚀

I encountered a very strange issue today.

After letting #Fedora40 update itself my laptop wouldn’t boot, not even to the BIOS, luckily I had encountered this before with #Fedora39 back when it was pre-release.

The solution? Open up my laptop 💻 remove the hard drive, boot to BIOS, power off, reinstall the same hard drive, power on again.

This is the second time I’ve had this issue with a pre-release version.

@fedora does this ring any bells?

Thinking of transitioning from #Fedora39 #workstation to #Silverblue.

Have any others made the same migration? And, if so, what pros/cons have you encountered?

As a reminder, @fedora 37 is going EOL tomorrow, December 5th!

Please make sure to upgrade to either Fedora 38 or Fedora 39 to stay on a supported version!

Alongside this, I will also be disabling the Fedora 37 build roots for any COPR project I run.

Fedora 39 has been released! 🎉

I gave a talk at the Fedora 39 release party about what's new and what's next for Fedora Atomic Desktops (Silverblue, Kinoite, Sericea and Onyx) and wrote the summary in this blog post: https://tim.siosm.fr/blog/2023/11/22/fedora-atomic-desktops-39/

Ich habe jetzt "Hessen" Wetter genommen. Das ist so genau und stimmig wie falsche Strümpfe 😑

Anyone else seeing random DNS lookup failures from systemd-resolved in ?

e.g., if you run:

dig kittens.small-web.org

(Random SERVFAIL errors.)

or

resolvectl --no-pager status; resolvectl query kittens.small-web.org

(Random “'kittens.small-web.org' does not have any RR of the requested type” and SERVFAIL errors. Calls reportedly routed from stub at 127.0.0.53 → my router. DNS on router set to 1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1)

It’s always DNS… :neko_roling_eyes:

Lo these many years ago, at some unreasonable hour late in the evening, I finished some forgettable but I'm sure important task and stopped by Gafton's desk to ask if he had anything I could take off his plate, as we were closing in on our next release of Red Hat Linux. He pointed to some scribbles on his whiteboard at the left side of his desk and spelled them out, "pam_console". In a sentence or two, he sketched his idea for something to get rid of manually copying cookies and setting the display after invoking su, before you could run any graphical programs. In a moment, the whole structure was clear in my mind and it was just a matter of transcribing the code from my mind to my computer and debugging.

That was one of I don't remember how many all-nighters of that release, and by I think 6AM the following morning (Saturday maybe?) I had his idea working. Stephen Tweedie kindly did a security review and found a change I needed to make, but as of that RHL release, manually using xauth to copy cookies around and setting DISPLAY was unregrettable history.

I wish Gafton were still with us. Pour one out... 😢

Upgrading from Fedora Silverblue 38 to 39?

If you have rpm-fusion layered, do the following before upgrading:

  1. Pin your current distribution so you can roll back in case something goes wrong:

sudo ostree admin pin 0

  1. Reinstall rpm-fusion:

rpm-ostree update --uninstall rpmfusion-free-release --uninstall rpmfusion-nonfree-release --install rpmfusion-free-release --install rpmfusion-nonfree-release

  1. Continue upgrade as usual: https://fedoramagazine.org/how-to-rebase-to-fedora-linux-39-on-silverblue/

#fedoraSilverblue #fedora39 #upgrade

aral, (edited )
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

PS. If you get the following error on Step 1: “Cannot pin staged deployment”, it just means that you already have an operating system update pending so just reboot (sudo reboot) to apply it and then carry out the major version upgrade.

(Basically, just ensure you have the latest version of Fedora 38 installed before updating to Fedora 39. Given the nature of Fedora Silverblue, that could likely be today’s version.) ;)

Smooth upgrade in a couple of minutes to Fedora Silverblue 39.

(And, if for some reason it hadn’t been, I could have rolled back to Fedora Silverblue 38 with a single gesture. Try that when a macOS upgrade gets borked. And yes, I’ve had macOS upgrades get borked*. Not fun.)

  • Hint: make sure there’s enough disk space before installing an upgrade or get ready for a world of hurt.

Also, not having to backup all data and reinstall to switch distros is so nice!

Thinking I might just have to do a fresh install of #Fedora39. No time to troubleshoot upgrade problems, sadly, and I just really want to use the new stuff. I guess I'm impatient and a bad FOSS user, but I'm telling myself I'll make up for it once I get some commissions done and can toss a few bucks towards projects I like.

  • nb : Fedora 39 has an installation bug. Installing Fedora 38 minimal then upgrading to 39 is the simplest solution. Kudos as usual to Canonical for shipping a trouble free install on Mac.
