What’s the status of Google Cast support on the Linux desktop these days?

I know I’ve seen various projects at various stages to get audio and/or video streaming to Chromecasts, Nest Hubs, and Google Cast speakers, but none of them have actually worked for me—especially as someone on either Endless OS (GNOME 43) or Fedora Silverblue.

Am I behind the latest developments here?

Okay, gonna give another shot today.

Last time I tried a couple weeks ago, it ended in unmitigated disaster after hours of trying. Let's hope this week goes better. I need to at least get a basic distro working so I can start testing Linux builds of game, even if I can't get it working well enough for day-to-day development.

I'm making a couple changes from last time I tried:

  1. I'm simplifying my monitors. I normally have 5 monitors, operating from both the ports on the PCI GPU as well as the built-into-the-motherboard GPU ports. Windows was able to handle that with no problem, but I think it's an uncommon enough setup that it's making Linux choke. I think I can make it work with 4 monitors on just the dedicated GPU.

  2. I'm trying more distros. Before I shut down Windows, I'll have 7 different labelled thumb drives: Linux , , , , , , and

Unfortunately, I can't currently switch from NVIDIA graphics cards because of a vendor requirement of one of my clients, so that's just a limitation I'll need to live with.

Here's hoping I can get it to work this time.

Still a long way to go, but at least it should be good enough to test my game!

A proposal has been made for the upcoming Fedora 41, the Anaconda installer, to become a native Wayland app, dropping X11 dependencies.

Here is my new GNU/Linux distribution guide about Debian KDE 12, the right GNU/Linux distribution for professional digital painting in 2024! Also about three major problems with GNU/Linux distros that will drive away all professional artists, IMO, and how I got kicked out of the Fedora KDE ecosystem with F40, which imposed Plasma6 and Wayland. I hope it helps other artists here!

Booting Microsoft completely due to #AI bullshit moves.

#fedora, buddy, why do I download a 4gb iso for install then have to do 4gb of updates on first boot?

There's gotta be a more efficient way to do this.

Reflection... 20 years ago Bill Riemers offered a WSL before was a thing; called .

I maintained images for Fedora, CentOS and OpenSUSE (for mono):

https://github.com/gbraad-fedora/colinux-images

which were 'officially' available for use with coLinux:

http://colinux.org and https://sourceforge.net/projects/colinux/files/Images%202.6.x%20Fedora/

Automating the image generation taught me a lot about how Linux was structured and their dependencies.

Okay, now that I finally got it to install and I'm playing for some time, my assessment of is, quite simply:
It's great, when it works.

Now, let's put Linux's famous configurability to the test by trying to get my unique weirdo keyboard layout to work properly (I use Programmer Dvorak, but I like it to revert to QWERTY when I hold the Ctrl key to make ergonomic choices for shortcuts (think, ctrl+z through ctrl+v) still work.)

Finally starting the 3.13 rebuild in with @hroncok.
First, we built it as a regular Python in the distribution and used the testing to assess whether we can continue. 24 hours after beta2 was released, we rebuilt it as a main Python for the distribution in Fedora's build system.

Now we "only" need to get those 4000 Python packages to build with it :) Phew.

I'm running a Samba server on my Raspberry Pi, and I'm able to log in and use it without trouble on my Debian 12 system. But on Fedora Silverblue 40, I can create, delete and read files but cannot write to them.

Any Silverblue users have a tip on what I can do to fix this?

Could it be something related to UID?
