What’s the status of Google Cast support on the Linux desktop these days?
I know I’ve seen various projects at various stages to get audio and/or video streaming to Chromecasts, Nest Hubs, and Google Cast speakers, but none of them have actually worked for me—especially as someone on either Endless OS (GNOME 43) or Fedora Silverblue.
Last time I tried a couple weeks ago, it ended in unmitigated disaster after hours of trying. Let's hope this week goes better. I need to at least get a basic distro working so I can start testing Linux builds of game, even if I can't get it working well enough for day-to-day development.
I'm making a couple changes from last time I tried:
I'm simplifying my monitors. I normally have 5 monitors, operating from both the ports on the PCI GPU as well as the built-into-the-motherboard GPU ports. Windows was able to handle that with no problem, but I think it's an uncommon enough setup that it's making Linux choke. I think I can make it work with 4 monitors on just the dedicated GPU.
Unfortunately, I can't currently switch from NVIDIA graphics cards because of a vendor requirement of one of my clients, so that's just a limitation I'll need to live with.
Here is my new GNU/Linux distribution guide about Debian KDE 12, the right GNU/Linux distribution for professional digital painting in 2024! Also about three major problems with GNU/Linux distros that will drive away all professional artists, IMO, and how I got kicked out of the Fedora KDE ecosystem with F40, which imposed Plasma6 and Wayland. I hope it helps other artists here!
Help us test DNF 5.2 in Fedora Rawhide! In these test days we're focusing on the ability to do a system upgrade, so it's very important to catch any bugs.
"We added a “Forged on” date to fastfetch since uptime doesn’t really make much sense anymore so we surface the date you installed your system. Now you can flex your longevity. 😈"
Thanks to one of our Community Operations interns, we have gotten the Fedora 40 Release Party talks ready to watch on our YouTube channel! Go back to see what you missed - lots of great information.
Okay, now that I finally got it to install and I'm playing for some time, my assessment of #Fedora#Linux is, quite simply:
It's great, when it works.
Now, let's put Linux's famous configurability to the test by trying to get my unique weirdo keyboard layout to work properly (I use Programmer Dvorak, but I like it to revert to QWERTY when I hold the Ctrl key to make ergonomic choices for shortcuts (think, ctrl+z through ctrl+v) still work.)
blendOS v4 has been released! #ArchLinux made #Immutable, #Declarative, and Atomic. Define your system with a single YAML file ('/system.yaml') supporting packages/kernels/DEs from the Arch #Linux repos & #AUR.
The Fedora Podcast returns! @itguyeric is back, this time joined by Peter Boy to discuss documentation in Fedora. This episode is prerecorded and going live on Tue, Jun 11 at 5pm EDT (9pm UTC).
Finally starting the #Python 3.13 rebuild in #Fedora with @hroncok.
First, we built it as a regular Python in the distribution and used the testing #copr to assess whether we can continue. 24 hours after beta2 was released, we rebuilt it as a main Python for the distribution in Fedora's build system.
Now we "only" need to get those 4000 Python packages to build with it :) Phew.
I'm running a Samba server on my Raspberry Pi, and I'm able to log in and use it without trouble on my Debian 12 system. But on Fedora Silverblue 40, I can create, delete and read files but cannot write to them.
Any Silverblue users have a tip on what I can do to fix this?
@governa I too have a 2013 MBA (second screen for video consumption). I have #Fedora running and it has given this beautiful machine a new lease of life.
