Hello, #Fediverse! We have a #comedian on the scene! Let me introduce you all to @JokeBot!

I created an account on botsin.space to showcase a framework I made, also called JokeBot, for posting #jokes on the fediverse; I originally posted jokes on my current account, but it was posting a bit too "loudly." Hence, that's why @JokeBot is here.

@JokeBot is currently fully operational; I already boosted its first post, and I will continue to boost its posts for my existing followers to see them.

Let's give @JokeBot a round of #applause, shall we?

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

if someone is being impersonated on the how do they find out?

sure you can search for user names, but doesn't help with impersonation on defederated servers right?

any way to search the whole thing or have all the projects aiming to do that stopped because of backlash @ the idea of a fediverse-wide search function?

Good morning and Happy Saturday #Fediverse!

Let’s grab a #KoffeeWithKyle as we do every morning and chat about what we have planned for today or what we have already accomplished.

I’ll start. I’ll be doing some ministry this morning. After that we have a funeral service for the father of a lady in our congregation. Then we will have a get together after that. For the rest of the day, not sure.

I would rarely, if ever be posting at this time on any social media. The whole "Miracle Morning" style early coffee and the sunrise is when I like to read the news and check my social feeds.

If posting during typical daylight hours in Korea is this lively though, uh oh. I'm never going to get anything done. This is wild!

😆

Being able to export my social graph on the Fediverse from Mastodon, then import it into on an entirely different service like Calckey without having to start over has broken my brain.

There really isn't a walled garden on the Fediverse! Adding my Mastodon followers worked flawlessly. I could even import my lists! Rebuilding my content filter rules is a bit of a daunting task best left for some other time. I'm going to enjoy this for a bit.

The enhanced features of MFM posting seem very nice too. A post preview to prevent formatting mistakes? Markdown language with custom emoji? 3k character count? Reactions? All Sweet. I also appreciate being able to add hashtags in their own space without having to insert them throughout the post. It makes texts much easier to read.

First impressions of Calckey are very positive.

Emerging thoughts:

What #Bluesky developers need to focus on: (and may be, I hope) actual Federation and adding clarity on how moderation, blocking, labeling really work. Dramatic upgrades needed and may be in the works.

What #Fediverse developers need to be doing: dramatically upping UX and onboarding. Good things in the works.

What #Indieweb and Fedi developers need to be doing: building software bridges between those two protocols & relays to handle AP-ATprotocol two way traffic at scale.

stefanm, to internet

@fediversenews interested in views on whether it's OK that there's no opt-out for tweets being mirrored to the #fediverse by #birdmakeup. Seems to me that users on a platform supposedly concerned with ownership of data should be able to get that a twitter user's request not to pull their tweets over to #activitypub should be taken seriously

especially since fediverse-wide post-deletion options are currently very sketchy!

The feeds can be a bit tumbleweed and ghost town on the weekend but it's never a bad time to #askFedi again.

What have you enjoyed about RFF? How have you explained it to other artists/listeners?

Any fedi accounts, publications, casts that might like to amplify what you've made of RFF so far?

Reaching folk in different corners of the fedi is awesome for our contributing artists!

Whenever I see negative feedback about the , it is about:

  1. being lonely
  2. lacks discoverability
  3. reach is poor
  4. support for this and that is lacking
  5. not welcoming for other people

All of the above, it has to do with what I've described in this quoted post, . Meaning, one was only exposed to a very small part of the fediverse from that person's vantage point.

Let's take for example the #5 item. Is the fediverse not welcoming for certain groups of people, the minorities, the marginalised, those with disabilities, and often discriminated based on origin?

I am an , a - to be exact, and I am also . There is an active community, as well as , for Filipinos and here in the fediverse network.

Have you seen those? More likely not. Why? “Observable fediverse.”

In , an is the part of the huge universe that we can observe from Earth. It is how far our current technology can reach.

It is the same in “observable fediverse”. What you see, what you are interacting with, is only what you currently have access to. Your “observable fediverse” relies on these factors:

  1. The users in your instance.
  2. The remote users and other servers your instance is aware of.
  3. The people you are following (which include groups).

That is your “observable fediverse”.

Since you are not following a user who is following a Filipino, or is a member of an autistic group, there is very little chance you will see content from Filipinos and autistics.

Another reason of disappointment is misunderstanding what the “fediverse/global timeline” is. Here's the thing, it is just the public chatter.

Think of it as visiting a crowded public park. You'll hear all kinds of discussions. There are those that are offensive, and those that are not.

The “federated/global timeline” is also not the entirety of the fediverse. It is only what your instance/server is aware of. If what you most see are unwelcoming content, then don't look at it, or move to a new instance, or ask around. I'm sure your own instance will help you find like-minded individuals and groups.

That's your observable fediverse. The fediverse is not unwelcoming. My guesstimate is, no one account, no one server, have seen more than 1% of the entire fediverse. Just like how we haven't seen more than 1% of the entire universe.

^_^

Catonauts, to tech

I see posts from Mastodon boosted here on Calckey and I wonder how they did that? 🤔

Oh well, I will find out somewhen, no hurry. I try to look through all that tech talk and figure out what it could possibly mean in practical terms. I often have no idea but I find it fascinating 😊 #tech #Calckey #Mastodon #Fediverse

Catonauts,

@spiralmind Thank you and yes, I understand that´s the federation part. What I don´t understand or better haven´t figured out is how that works in practice. I mean, it doesn´t look like a copy-paste link or something. Or maybe I´m just misinterpreting what I see?

(example attached) #tech #Calckey #Mastodon #Fediverse

spiralmind,

@Catonauts Yeah, the federation lets you follow/boost people from other instances. You can use the Search box to search for users by their username, or paste the address to, for example, a #Mastodon post, and you'll get the option to boost it from #Calckey.

That part of the #Fediverse is still a bit cumbersome, but no doubt there will be improvements to the process.

Catonauts,

@spiralmind Aha! Thank you, I thought there might be a magic trick kind of 😉

I don´t mind the cumbersome part. If I wanted easy and convenient access, I could have stuck with Twitter or any other go to any other big-tech-ruled Social Media out there. Also, from what I have observed, great improvements have been made and some are on their way. #tech #Calckey #Mastodon #Fediverse

Catonauts,

@Ewan_Croft

Thank you, Ewan. I think I have figured it out now with help from @spiralmind #tech #Calckey #Mastodon #Fediverse

Catonauts,

I have just realised I would have figured it out earlier if only I had imported my list of followers & follows from the Mastodon instance I´m on rolls eyes

Anyway, thanks again everyone! #tech #Calckey #Mastodon #Fediverse

Couldn’t we just make a #BlueSky adapter? Two options come to mind:

  1. Make a PR for BlueSky that implements #ActivityPub
  2. Build a service which “impersonates” all mastodon users on bluesky and all bluesky users on mastodon.

...#assimilated, in a #Borg sense.

#BlockTheMetaHordes because, as we all know, "...Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile."

What is sensible, on the other hand, is making it ever more easy to join the #Fediverse by selecting the best fitting platform technologies and instances and finding like-minded people and subjects of interest.

In this sense, I still believe "in the market".

So, I think I've dug as deeply into the drama as I need to, and settled on some conclusions.

  • Most basically, the best insights came from seeing conversations on another platform: discord.

Admins from both sides were talking. And as it's a chat platform, the engagement and conversation was clearly more direct, free, expressive and clarifying.

If the fediverse wants to be the new internet, seriously, it needs to growup and move on from just microblogging.

1/🧵

Bigou,

@AuntyChrist @maegul @fediversenews While not perfect, I think #Misskey & #Calckey correspond mpre to what you're asking for. And being part of the #Fediverse, they can comunicate with Mastodon.
