So the new Instagram text thing is reported to have ActivityPub support and instead of being happy at all the new labor that could potentially be coming to the standard, Mastodon people are now actively encouraging instances to not federate with any of that stuff. K.

koherecoWatchdog,

@film_girl
There are multiple virtues in play here. Consider that I boycott #Microsoft for 50+ reasons. Let’s say MS wants to do something good & they make changes so 5 of the reasons I boycott them go away. Well I’m still boycotting MS for 45+ other reasons. FB, #Cloudflare, MS, #Amazon, Twitter, etc, are socially detrimental & abuse the data they get their hands on to the full extent possible.

HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE someone has finally done it!

Finally a system that allows all(?) users to not only block the likes of , Amazon, , Twitter-buyer, and more, but that also tells you with a slick notification when it does!

Overjoyed right now.

New post: Using a CloudFlare Tunnel to share a local development site over the internet

I've been using ngrok for this purpose until now, but wanted to play around with CloudFlare Tunnels, and I really like that setup. It seems a lot faster than ngrok too, and I can use my own domain name!

@weirdwriter the #HCaptcha might be coming from use of #Cloudflare on the #Calckey instance, maybe.

Otherwise @mcaptcha is a #FOSS alternative to consider.

I will ping @realaravinth as I believe #Accessibility is a key feature. It isn't listed as such on the website.

Been trying to get home automation working on my #raspberrypi. Was originally going to try and make some of the stuff myself with python, but decided to try out #HomeAssistant.

It worked well...until I tried to get #Alexa working. Now, full disclosure, I do not want to have to keep using Alexa - I mostly just use it as an alarm, for it's builtin segmented display that acts as a clock, and for playing podcasts. That's really it. And I've been wanting to go to an alternative (maybe even DIY) but you know...💵

Nor do I have anything against Home Assistant. I think it works amazing. However, to get Alexa working you need to PAY for a subscription to their cloud service to access the instance from away...and I just find that that kind of breaks the magic of being an #opensource and modular automation suite. And if I want to use it away from home I can just make a #cloudflare tunnel.

I guess I am going to have to find some other solution...

@tim ... I'm trying to get activitypub working on my blog and I'm getting issues with webfinger and loop backs. I am self hosting so in control of everything, but haven't got a clue where to start. I'm using cloudflare CDN with aggressive custom caching rules so I be suspect that might be part of the problem.

Have you got some links I can use to troubleshoot? I remember you also had some caching issues.

    tim,

@chrisshaw ah, yeah, if you are using #Cloudflare with aggressive caching you are more than likely going to have an issue with #ActivityPub on your #Wordpress site working right. Currently Cloudflare doesn't properly respect the need to serve HTML to normal visitors and JSON to ActivityPub requests. Here are a couple of resources from @dustinrue that will be helpful:

@jasontucker is also another person that has had challenges with Cloudflare.

I’m currently paying them $11.90 a month to host my homeserver on their EMS platform.

My payment in April will have been the last.

It’s one thing to provide FLOSS comms to the government. It’s another to proudly support our fucked up police system.

    koherecoWatchdog,

@Nour @tek_dmn #Cloudflare sees everything that happens on the matrix·org server, so there’s that. Speaking of CF, #Element has also put their website under control of the web’s police (Cloudflare indeed). Which makes them despicable enough even before the OP’s revelation.

③ Let the attack play out. Everyone running servers tends to be self-centered thinking their server is so important that it justifies patronage. Which just passes the security buck on to everyone else. If this is a non-profit op, then doing nothing is still better than growing the great wall… the largest & most oppressive walled garden on the internet. Stop feeding it. Booters are the reason for CF growth.

If you use an S3 provider that doesn't support object-level ACLs, like Cloudflare R2 or Backblaze B2, make sure to set S3_PERMISSION to empty in your Mastodon server config (.env.production file)

Otherwise your users won't be able to generate archives of their accounts. :Blobhaj_Read_MD:

@tekkie yeah, a bunch of people will avoid it. Plus, there is no info what #CloudFlare considers an "event" and why it needed "mitigation". And if it's a small site, presumably going static would be feasible, which would remove a gigantic amount of attack surface, without putting a spying gatekeeper between the site and its visitors.
