When disabled students have been active demanding online options be available by default..that UC develop, support, and invest in creative, accessible online options, pointing out that it helps us be more prepared for emergencies anyway, many abled students denigrated that activism.

Today, as Davis experienced a 3rd stabbing incident in a week, the UC Davis sub-Reddit is full of several threads demanding online classes.

We need people to listen to us and join us in activism when we point out that creative, accessible online options must be available by default and that development of them should be fast-tracked for accessibility and other reasons. #UCAccessNow #accessibility #a11y

So, this morning I ended up with an interesting email in my work email from someone claiming the company site is not ADA accessible and how they are the owner of a California startup with a one-line code widget solution to accessibility and want to possibly partner with myself and one of the other folks I work with to split future net revenue. Yeah, how about GTFO out of here with that overlay stuff and how you got my company email I am seriously curious to know. #A11y #Scam

Yet another shoutout for #a11y feedback...

If you're based in (or have easy access to) London, UK and you primarily use a screenreader, would you be interested in testing out an image recognition app for an exhibition at the Natural History Museum, South Kensington?

Do share around! Feel free to DM me for details.

Those who seek posted images that don't include alt text solely to justify chastising and shaming people publicly are self-deluded trolls.

Their actions undermine the good nature of , which doesn't require coercion through fear and humiliation.

If you really want to help, simply post applicable alt text as a reply to the post and, if you feel called, include a link that explains the importance of alt text and the people it helps. This link from the Perkins School for the Blind is a great example:

https://www.perkins.org/resource/how-write-alt-text-and-image-descriptions-visually-impaired/

Bottom line? Don't be a jerk. Be kind and helpful. #a11y #UX

Small #accessibility refresher:

If a hashtag has multiple words, capitalizing each word enables screenreaders to pronounce it correctly instead of mashed together as one long word.

This is often called #CamelCase and it also makes hashtags more legible for lots of other people by making it easier to see the word break: language learners, people with dyslexia, people with cognitive impairments are just a few groups that might benefit.

Thanks for helping out on this!

Apropos of nothing in particular:
“Accessibility ‘Gaps’ in MVPs”

If your MVP does not have accessibility factored in, it is not viable.

Bonjour !

Automatically generated video captions are not sufficiently accessible as they lack proper punctuation, capitalization, and spelling, as explained further in this #NoMoreCraptions video by Rikki Poynter: https://youtu.be/-O4YcVQt5NM
Until YouTube and others improve their automatic captions, here's a Python script that runs OpenAI's #Whisper locally on your computer:

“No, APG’s Support Charts Are Not ‘Can I Use’ for ARIA”
https://adrianroselli.com/2023/04/no-apgs-support-charts-are-not-can-i-use-for-aria.html

Despite claims, these are not ARIA support charts and not analogous to Can I Use. While brand new and likely to grow, their scope is still strictly APG patterns.

Question for the #firefox #a11y folks. Both Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge have an option to try and fill out alt-text when it's missing. While the feature is obviously nowhere near as good as people correctly labelling things, and is probably bad for privacy, it does enable me to complete tasks I need to complete and would otherwise have to abandon. Is there a way to get a similar feature in Firefox? With CTW now a thing, I'm once again hearing the narrative that Firefox is somehow the "most accessible" browser. Between missing an accessibility feature that the two other major browsers have, and the way it constantly messes with my taskbar by pinning itself with every upgrade, I'm struggling to understand where this idea is coming from. I feel like I must be missing something really important, because a lot of really smart folks seem to believe this.

My #accessible text-game, Hybrid, is now available on Itch, as part of the #GamesForBlindGamers jam.

It's definitely a #roguelike/#rougelite, kinda MUDish, and honestly kind of fun! But difficult (especially without healing skills) and short. Hopefully someone out there likes it, I spent hours balancing and another hour writing an epic story 😅

Play it here: https://deengames.itch.io/hybrid

Wrote a post about VoiceOver’s Trackpad Commander (on Mac). It works in much the same way as VoiceOver on iOS: swiping and double tapping your way around the interface. @yatil @myrdin I’d love more info on Asia and Africa. I understand only Kenya has accessibility regulations but other African countries may have general non -discrimination laws. I typically didn’t include those unless there was an #a11y connection. I’ll add any info you can find. Thx
