One of the big features lemmy is missing is standardized tags for communities that you can block. So a community can be tagged “porn,” “sports,” or “politics” and you can then search by our block communities by tag. That would fix this.
spoiler“At least our free countries don’t have morality police controlling what people can wear” - “Just because you don’t see them doesn’t mean they don’t exist… maybe they’re just better dressed and better hidden… they don’t have to control what you wear if they can control what you see…”...
Reading the sources you’ll see they pushed to ban sexual depictions of minors and rape on one website, and changing the names of such tags on the other two.
How puritanical banning child porn.
This doesn’t deserve sympathy and isnt comparable to not providing payment services to sex workers.
Two of the biggest deepfake pornography websites have now started blocking people trying to access them from the United Kingdom.
This isn’t (yet) the UK blocking access to them as part of a Great Firewall of Britain thing. This is the sites themselves blocking visitors from the UK, the same as porn sites for various US states.
As with porn sites, it’ll be using the geoIP tag of your IP address, which is notoriously unreliable, especially near geopolitical boundaries.
Using a VPN or even a third-party (rather than your ISP’s) DNS server will often get around them. However, doing so will eventually probably get you in trouble.
The cat is out of the bag and despite many years of warning before this and similar technology became widely available, nobody was really prepared for it - and everyone is solely acting in their own best interests (or what they think their best interests to be). I think the biggest failure is that despite there being warnings...

Some people use NSFW tags as spoiler tags, so possibly. There’s also varying definitions of NSFW (language, news articles that might be upsetting, etc).
Agree, there needs to be more granularity with post tagging.
Best compromise I’ve found is using a Lemmy UI that will blur NSFW stuff and let you click to reveal it. You can also block porn instances / communities if you don’t want to fight through those (browsing /all on many instances is a minefield of porn lol).
Is there any issue open in lemmy git for additional filters ???
I absolutely support this. Idealy, we'd have 3 NSFW tags:
One for porn, one for gore and one for everything else.
Side note: I'd also very much welcome regular tags for posts. Have you tried to search for a specific meme you saw a week or so ago? It is impossible. I'd love to have tags for different meme formats and templates, so you can more specifically search for an image post with an generic title.
Have you perchance heard of “stash”? It’s a neat little program to sort and tag all the porn you’ve saved and access it thought a neat little webui. I’ve personally yet to actually use it, but maybe I will if I set up my own cloud
In fact, sometimes! Sometimes I check GitHub's difference between tags and open commits with commit summaries too vague on the first page. Yeah, it's pretty much just a basic scan, but since it's open source I don't think they'll be brave enough to do things too nefarious and hidden, which like the bystander effect you've said, I feel like will come to light anyway. Hell, someone somehow managed to find furry porn in Thorium.
I’ve made a post a few days ago. I’d argue we should make a proper distinction. Adult content and NSFW isn’t the same thing. Currently everything from sex education to gore and death is the same category. I think it’s really not. NSFW tags help so you can scroll through things in an open-plan office or while commuting. Porn is porn and gore is gore. I think we shouldn’t oversimplify this but keep the nuances and have different categories. Also I’d like to not mix stuff like sex education which might be fine, and minors ask those questions all the time on Reddit with other things like fetish.
There’s a better way to legislate/regulate this that conservatives are either intentionally overlooking or are just too ignorant to come up with on their own.
Instead of putting up easily circumvented barriers to accessing porn, why not require that sites which serve adult material be labeled with an HTML meta tag indicating as much? This puts responsibility for compliance on the content providers while allowing for parents to install applications on their kids’ devices that deny access to that material. Parents can then have their parental rights to allow or deny access to this material while content providers are minimally burdened to set up the necessary protections. Nothing is outright banned, so everyone keeps their freedom to produce or consume porn. It also establishes a framework for indicating more granular detail about the kind of content offered on a per-page basis, allowing for finer parental controls (around, say, gambling or cryptocurrency or non-pornographic sexual material or violence or literally anything you like).
Hey fellow users of the Fediverse, instance admins and platform developers. I’d like to see better means of handling adult content on the Fediverse. I’d like to spread a bit of awareness and request your opinions and comments....
NSFW is already off by default when you sign up to most instances
I don’t think this works in practice. Most big instances have gone the extra step to also defederate from the two major porn instances here. Showcasing that there are additional issues, otherwise they’d just have used this instead. I took a quick random sample of the biggest Lemmy instances and ~50-60% additionally block them entirely.
NSFW and 18+ aren’t the same thing. The NSFW tag is made for a slightly different purpose. And it’s a crutch that doesn’t work well for this purpose. There are some slightly vulgar topics that shouldn’t inadvertently pop up at your workplace but they might be safe to consume for minors. Also I think minors should have access to sex education. The Wikipedia has a similar stance. There are videos of “the act” on Wikimedia. You shouldn’t watch them while sitting in your open-plan office. But I think especially with the situation of sex ed in the USA, adolescents should get a chance to ask their questions and learn something about important aspects of life. The NSFW tag as is is doing them a disservice because now they can’t. Or everything else immediately gets mixed in. For example I’m not comfortable sharing my experiences >!sticking bluetooth-enabled things into somebody’s bum!< with kids. Or having sex ed and hardcore fetish stuff being the same category.
And I mean it’s not even just that. Gore and pictures of dead bodies in the Ukraine war also fall into the same category. So everyone just gets a yes/no decision on everything ranging from sex education to gore. In practice both these extremes aren’t very common on Lemmy. But in theory it’s just like that. (It’s not entirely theoretical. We just have a different community here. But there are examples in the wild. For example 4chan mixes pretty tame porn with fetish with crime, gore and death.)
So in summary the current state of (mis)using the NSFW tag actively leads to defederation and it’s doing a disservice to both people who participate in adult conversations and also adolescents. And its overly simplistic design prevents some conversations which should be allowed.
Why do you think porn is bad/unsuitable for 14-17 year olds?
My opinion doesn’t really count here. There are legal requirements people need to implement, whether they like it or not. So that’s kind of already the end of this conversation.
I think it makes a difference if you watch (somewhat tasteful) plain sex, or >!somebody dangling from a hook in the ceiling getting whipped by a disguised old man!<. I think it’s just not the same category. And we shouldn’t treat it as such. Similarly it’s also not the same if you deliberately explore that when you’re 17. Or you’re inadvertently exposed to it when 12 while researching what sex education has failed to provide you with.
And there’s the aspect of me inviting friends and family to my self-hosted services. Or discussing Linux server administration with people. I don’t want to mix either of that with porn. I think having it hidden per default is a good first step. And just requiring an extra, deliberate step to enable it is a good design. It just lacks any of the nuances to it, mingles valid use-cases with filtering that is made to do something else, and as I pointed out with the defederation happening, it comes with issues in practice.
And I think the Fediverse offers some important advantages over other platforms. ActivityPub is very vague. We can just attach fields to label content and the technical aspect is kind of simple to implement. And with federation, we have diversity built-in to the platform. This is our unique advantage. People have different use-cases, different moderation needs and perspectives and opinions on something like my proposal with the filtering. And I think the Fediverse turns out to be made exactly for something like this. I could have my instance my way and someone else can have a different opinion and have their instance another way.
But it requires some coordination effort. We need to agree on a foundation and some technical aspects. I don’t think a crazy rag rug works as a whole. And we already see some consequences of other disputes. Moderation being a constant issue in the background and instances seperating from each other because there’s no nuance to moderation and defederation. And ultimately we want to talk to each other and connect. And provide everyone with a place they like.
It's kind of annoying how many porn accounts post to the #lgbt#lgbtq#trans#nonbinary and similar hashtags. I wish they would at least throw a not safe for work tag on the posts so the filter I have configured would skip them in my feed. 😒
Hello my brother in pornography! I’m the same way, it’s the weirdest thing. I love maintaining my collection more than I do “utilizing” it - it’s such a weird thing. As another commenter mentioned check out Stash, it will change your hoarding game (There is quite the active community for it too!), I have a tremendous library all custom tagged (To the point of even having the personal “emotion” of individual videos even tagged!) and I just love growing it and maintaining it.
If you’ve been doing this for some time as I have I’m curious - do you also have a number of videos which are weirdly nostalgic? Like you feel very fondly about them even though they may be low quality/not content you are particularly into today, but you can’t imagine not having them in the library? Some of my most “treasured” videos are ones which I would never seek out today haha
Edit: Fun fact, I’ve been a Lemmy lurker ever since the Reddit API nonsense, but this is the one comment that finally had me actually interact with the community. It is the porn that binds us? :D
On one hand, the anime community, especially those within the lolicon community, have a pedo problem. It’s less serious in Japan (I’ve seen some artists being really mad at those who use the “pedo” tag on Pixiv), but the west just glorifies it as “gatekeeping”, which they think will keep the fandom pure of outside influences, while they’re being infiltrated by the right. This leads to them using right wing “arguments”, like argument from hypocrisy, the whole “people who see X are the real X”, or the whole “the LGBTQ+ are the real predators”.
On the other hand, one could argue that not even all “loli” type characters are canonically kids, some real women find comfort in them (a lot of men really need certain “adult signifiers”, and seen a lot of women being harassed for not looking or talking mature enough), and the evidence trying to tie the “just drawings” to real harm is really foggy and often seem to be the same exact ones used by anti-porn activists to try to bullshit their will onto other people through the law (see the ban on “extreme pornography” in the UK, where people argued it would normalize “dangerous sexual acts”). Hell, I remember people fearing pubic hair removal will lead to the normalization of pedophilia since I remember pubic hair removal being a thing.
