Today I'm dropping my third (~1 min). It's about a game I'm sure everyone here played at least once in a lifetime. 🤼‍♂️

What are your thoughts on Street Fighter 2 on Game Boy? 🤔

Is it a good port considering the Game Boy's hardware? 👌

Or do you know even worse ports? 👎

Street Fighter II originally was released for arcades in 1991 and has been ported to numerous consoles and platforms. But did you know that even the Game Boy Classic got his own version of the most influential fighting game ever made?The Game Boy port was released in 1995 and had to be reduced in complexity due to the limited capabilities of the handheld. From the characters side Dhalsim, E. Honda, Vega and their home stages didn't make it into the game. Because the Game Boy only had two buttons, the strength of punches and kicks has to be determined by the duration of button presses and many of the character moves had to be simplified or completely removed. The game runs at less than ten frames per second and in the stages there are no moving background elements or destructible objects. But there are also positive aspects about the Game Boy version. The game offers large, recognizable character sprites and three different game modes. When playing the game on the Super Game Boy, the health bars can be colored and there are unique borders that follow the stage that you're fighting on. By Game Boy standards the game can be seen as an excellent conversion. But the numerous downgrades only made it a bad fallback option for those not having access to a home console or computer.

@repeatro as you already know, I had the GB port as a kid.
I was too young to understand hardware limitations, so after seeing and playing Street Fighter II on the Sega Mega Drive and PC, I wanted my own copy.
I was really disappointed, especially because of the missing characters. Lacking a link cable (and another copy), multiplayer was also off the table.
I eventually got the amazing Super Street Fighter II for the SNES, so there's still a happy ending to this story. 😅

@mforester

Something tells me that the game footage in the video is ripped of the exact same SF2 module you owned as a kid... 😉

From my todays perspective the port is not very good but playable. I think from the 90s perspective it could have been overwhelming for me, but I didn't know the other versions as a kid.

@repeatro I think in hindsight I was pretty lucky to experience the PC port of the game. I think it's relatively obscure nowadays, but I might be wrong.
Playing it with a keyboard sucks, BTW. Especially if you share the keyboard between two players. Remember that dinging noise whenever you press four or more keys at the same time? 🤣
Graphically it was a decent port I think. Better than the one on Sega if I remember it correctly.

@repeatro great video👍

For me still the c64 takes the crown of shittiness

@TheRetroSven

Thank you. 😃

Damn, the C64 version looks "special" 😆

TheRetroSven,
@TheRetroSven@fedinerds.social avatar

@repeatro it is indeed special xD

@TheRetroSven

Have you played it as a kid?

@repeatro The Game Boy Port is considered as the best Fighting Game on the GB, I played it a few years ago, as a kid I was into Mortal Kombat :) but let’s not talk about its GB port 😅

@TheRetroSven
I've heard there are some quite good fighting games for GB by SNK, like King of Fighters. They run smoother but have smaller character sprites than SF2.

TheRetroSven,
@TheRetroSven@fedinerds.social avatar

@repeatro That’s true, but for me and many others SF took the crown, despite the recognizable Charakters and Move sets compared to the Arcades

SF2 Game Boy Stream on Analogue Pocket by @TheRetroSven incoming :KEKW:

@repeatro I was thinking about a Game Boy Day soon, maybe I will include it :)

@repeatro@mastodon.social avatar

@TheRetroSven

That would be cool 👍

TheRetroSven,
@TheRetroSven@fedinerds.social avatar

@repeatro I will see, maybe I will to a poll on this and let the people pick 10 games I will try out :)

@TheRetroSven @repeatro TMNT III Radical Rescue all the way. 🤘😅

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@TheRetroSven @repeatro ouuuh. At one point I also owned the Mortal Kombat GB port. 😬
I hadn't played any of the other versions and only knew it by reputation. At the time, I didn't understand what all the fuss was about, because it didn't play very well and was of course heavily censored by Nintendo. 😅

TheRetroSven,
@TheRetroSven@fedinerds.social avatar

@mforester @repeatro Yeah, I knew it from the snes so my disappointment was huge 😅

repeatro,
@repeatro@mastodon.social avatar

@TheRetroSven

@mforester You obviously owned a lot of fighting games for Game Boy. Didn't you own King of Fighters, too... 😅

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@repeatro @TheRetroSven yeah, how did you know? 😅
You'll be surprised to know that I'm not actually that big into fighting games in general. Also wasn't the case when I was a kid. I honestly don't know why I had that many fighting games. 😅
I think King of Fighters' cover might have played a role in me acquiring it. 🤩
That one is also really good for a GB fighter. It's got a gigantic roster (but small sprites) and tons of special moves to remember and pretty decent graphics.
