All of my friends owned a PS1 but I went for the N64 because I wanted to play Mario Kart 64 and nothing else. 😆
I played many PS1 games on my friend's consoles. That way I experienced the birth of fundamental game series like Tekken, Gran Turismo, Silent Hill, Resident Evil or GTA. :underheart:

Did you also have to make a choice for one of the two consoles? Which one did you pick and why? 🤔

@repeatro When I was a Sega Megadrive kid I was convinced that I wanted a Saturn... Then one weekend I borrowed my Uncle's PS1 and Resident Evil 2....

... Never looked back...

@Hundstrasse

What do you think about this decision from your todays perspective?

@repeatro definitely the right one for me 😁... PS1/2 is probably still peak gaming era for me and where most of my retro collection is. But of course I'd love to own a Saturn now.

Never really considered N64... probably because I just didn't grow up with the core IP's. I actually DO own an N64 now, but it gathers dust, and as the only game I have for it (and the reason I picked it up a few years ago)... Is the bizarre port of Resident Evil 2 😂😂

@Hundstrasse

Isn't the RE2 N64 port considered a technical masterpiece?

gentarkin,

@repeatro @Hundstrasse Yes, but only because they somehow managed to compress a two disc PS1 game down to a 64MB cartridge. The effort involved to do that was incredibly impressive for the era, but in the end it's quality did suffer for it. Like any port of the era, it has it's good parts, but it's definitely not the definitive edition.

@gentarkin @repeatro yeah, pretty much a marvel of taking a game that was waaaay more suited to a CD system and getting it on cart (as @gentarkin said)... Also it has a few features unique to that version. Most notably the randomised mode.

@repeatro I bought the Playstation on day 1, because I wanted to play Wipeout. I later borrowed an N64 from a friend to play Mario 64 and bought my own N64 even later, for Zelda mostly. PS1 was definitely my #1 system of that generation, the N64 never had the same status as the SNES before that. The PS1 had more cool and weird stuff, it just was "the future". N64 was "just" for playing the Nintendo first party games for me.
