Seeing AI art slowly crop up on the covers of small novels, and in advertisements, and seeing blocks of AI text appear on web pages is making me so depressed.

It feels like the whole world is getting... degraded. It's all lower quality... not enough to matter, but it's a down grade.

Will anyone ever wonder "who drew this amazing cover art for this obscure sci fi book?" or will you ever chuckle at a little joke inserted in an online "how to" article?

The whole issue reminds me of this deeply prescient Judge Dredd story from decades ago. Comics creators have, I would say, always had a very keen understanding that management would replace them all with machines as soon as such a thing became possible.

ConsoleWitch,

@futurebird someone recently pointed out somewhere online that we're making humans into wage slaves and putting billions of dollars into letting computers generate art.

greatgrandma,

@futurebird
AI uses the creative property of others to compile an image or anything else. AI needs to pay royalty fees to each and every person included in the compilation produced by AI.

@futurebird Don't feel bad. It has been a tradition of the past 20 years to destroy everything for the sake of a few advertising dollars. From your favourite band, to indie game developers, to the whole planet your are standing on, including the junk collecting in orbit that will make space unusable, all at once.

Why should art feel any different?

tensaimon,

@futurebird might not take long for the internet (esp search) to become barely useable..... I'll miss bits of it more than others ....

the_Effekt,

@futurebird Me too. It feels similar to the slow creep of the effects of climate change.

AI, first meant to be a supplement to human innovation feels like it will expand to the point at which it just takes over.

The whole thing is reckless and dangerous and I'm dreading the day we lose control of it.

My grandma used to tell me that food tasted better back in the day, before it was mass produced.

Automation has always had the potential to be a good thing. The problem is, our world is controlled by capitalists.

If we had a UBI, people would be rejoicing if their job got replaced by a robot, since they wouldn't have to work as much, if at all anymore, and still be able to have a place to live, eat, and enjoy life.

I'm not going to begrudge an author who chose to use an AI image as their cover art, because that's one less barrier to entry for publishing.

daniecleme,

@futurebird call me old and what not, but when I think of AI I think of industrial process optimization, working out supply chain kinks, etc. using AI to make art, or write news articles, or whatever seems lazy, and simply driven by not wanting to PAY people. I’ll also remind those of you old enough to remember - 2001 space odyssey- didn’t work out so great! Lol

ignova,

@futurebird basically end-stage consumerism. stripping the last semblance of meaning from art, to sell a product that is probably also plagiarAIzed. the only human involvement coming from a sociopathic marketing department.

what puzzles me is what enjoyment anyone gets from this. just shallowness, fakery, and theft.

Or will we just consume it for the empty charb art, and treat it in a disposable manner. And even stop wondering who drew it. As the question is either too difficult to answer, or we just stop holding value in crediting art.

I dont think so. Not absolutely. Some will still hold value in living artists. And i hold hope that no matter how sofisticated it gets, we'll find some tell.

But capitalism is good at devaluing what it doesnt want. And some follow that.

prolixious,

@futurebird it’s the art & text version of a grey goo apocalypse

We were told computers & robots would liberate us from dreary, time-consuming, repetitive tasks, so we could devote ourselves to art, literature, music, science, innovation, and other creative pursuits... Happy #MayDay... #WorkersRights

@futurebird this perfectly captures and describes how I too feel about it.

jencmars,

@futurebird Part of what depresses me most about AI is how it disconnects people from each other. This disconnect is going to have a profound impact on our society in ways we can’t even begin to process. The way the internet creates anonymity and often brings out the worst in people but… more. It will dampen empathy, something we’re already struggling with and need to make things better.

We need labels on #AI generated works. We have a right to know.
