I got the mostly-salvaged-river-parts e-bike, aka E-xpand-o-bike, into enough shape this afternoon to take it on a ride around the block.

I still need to fabricate a mount for the battery and the controller and do all the cable routing, but it works!

And it looks peak mad scientist on meth right now, so I had to show a picture to the Fediverse.

My brother called it the IEB -- the improvised explosive bike. Now he's retconning IEB to mean improvised electric bike

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

I meant to make a lot of progress on the ebike today but I got bogged down in making these things for holding the motor controller on the bike frame.

They're so simple but somehow it took hours

timonsku,
@timonsku@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online I always feel like that with metal stuff, it always ends up taking ages

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@timonsku it's true

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

It mounts to the fork like so.

Somewhere, I have a sheet of neoprene rubber that I'm going to cut pieces from to put between the bracket and the bike, but I don't know where I left it at the moment

image/jpeg

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

I think my best option for mounting the battery is going to be this spot where a water bottle might normally go

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

Right now is a time when it would be really nice to have a milling machine. But I don't, so I'm going to have to make something to hold the battery by hand

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

It's ugly, but I think it will work. I think I will add slots to the metal tabs so I can so i can slip Velcro straps though them

@MLE_online I'm intrigued by the ham sticker

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@vxo that's the work of @misternineham

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

With everything more securely mounted, I took it for more of a test ride and had it up to 18mph, if the speedometer is accurate.

I probably need to come up with a less bulky case for the battery because it's kind of in the way. I'll give that some thought for a while

benjohn,
@benjohn@todon.nl avatar

@MLE_online in front of the handlebars (where a basket might go)?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@benjohn I would rather keep it in the middle of the frame of I can. The bike is already pretty front heavy with the hub motor up front

benjohn,
@benjohn@todon.nl avatar

@MLE_online Ah! That makes sense 👍👍👍 I was thinking the tubby container looks pretty cute and would look cool on the front. Mechanical sensibilities had not occurred to me!

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@benjohn It would be cute, and I would prefer to preserve it if I could

benjohn,
@benjohn@todon.nl avatar

@MLE_online how about … the back instead! :-)

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@benjohn I want to save the area above the rear wheel for a cargo rack. I'm kind of stuck with putting the battery in the middle somewhere

benjohn,
@benjohn@todon.nl avatar

@MLE_online this whole project is lovely and very impressive.

It makes me wonder if a kind of scrap heap challenge build a real working e-bike from mostly scavenged parts adult night class could well be very popular. I’d do it, if I could find time and it existed nearby.

It would seem like a lovely entry to having the courage to tinker and try stuff out, which seems to have become more intimidating to me sometime in the last 25 years.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@benjohn That would be so great.

What you said about tinkering being intimidating is why my friend Sam and I (previously my friend Roger and I) were hosting take-aparties. A lot of people are intimidated to take things apart, and we wanted to give them a place to do it without worrying they were going to mess something up.

benjohn,
@benjohn@todon.nl avatar

@MLE_online that’s a cool name 😆! It seems like the kind of thing that ought to happen near where I live (it’s that sort of place, I think), but I’ve not heard of it.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@benjohn I got the name from @rose_alibi

MLE_online,

I haven't come up with any good ideas for making a less bulky battery case so in the meantime I'm trying a different mounting system

VE2UWY,
@VE2UWY@mastodon.radio avatar

@MLE_online I guess you put it on the one of the 3 tubes that least annoys you while pedaling?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@VE2UWY yea, thats what im going to try for

ArchiteuthisFlux,
@ArchiteuthisFlux@hackaday.social avatar

@MLE_online I'm sure there are a million reasons why this is a terrible idea, but what about stuffing the frame with a bunch of 18650s?

On the upside, you don't have to make your own warning labels. You can just get some stickers from the band "This Bike is a Pipe Bomb"

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@ArchiteuthisFlux I think some e-bikes do this.

I won't because I already have an assembled battery pack, lol. I don't want to disassemble it.

I would very much like to put one of those stickers on my bike, but it would for sure end up blown up by the bomb squad

ArchiteuthisFlux,
@ArchiteuthisFlux@hackaday.social avatar

@MLE_online I like the idea that if you actually made a bike into a pipe bomb, you'd get stickers professionally printed to label it as such.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@ArchiteuthisFlux If we lived in a less insane country, people would look at such a bicycle and say to themselves, "It must not actually be a pipe bomb if it's labeled like that" and it would cause no stir whatsoever

VE2UWY,
@VE2UWY@mastodon.radio avatar

@MLE_online

Like more of a fin shape so to speak for the battery?

If you don't mind the heightened danger, your phone should give you a pretty good speed reading assuming it's using the GPS and not guessing positions from cell towers.

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@VE2UWY Probably something rectangular and less voluminous. The bare battery pack is like 60x68mm by about 10 inches long, so I could make something less bulky for it.

Once I get the bike more put together I'll double check the speed using my phone gps. Or maybe my actual GPS unit

@smellsofbikes what did it stand for before, besides UC Irvine, the school I dropped out of

smellsofbikes,
@smellsofbikes@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online Union Cycliste Internationale, the organization that says what race bikes can and can't have on them, and has inspectors who check to make sure nobody's cheating. They're the people out there with heat cameras looking for hidden electric assist electronics.

MLE_online,

@poleguy I would except that things are liable to fall off while riding in this condition

rachel,

@MLE_online

@MLE_online How fast did you get it up to?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@BsCreativeLife 15 mph. I thought it was going to top out at that, but after returning home, I discovered that I was only in speed 3, and that there are two sport speeds above three. So, it goes faster. I will try out the faster speeds after I get the electronics more securely mounted. I don't want anything falling off while I'm flying down the street.

MLE_online,

@Unixbigot A big duracell would be really funny, and it would help people realize it's not a bomb

crabbypup,

alontra,

@MLE_online looks great!!! I like it very much!

What motor is that? I'm thinking about converting mine and checking possibilities. What I would really love is to have regenerative brakes or some other form of generating power when going downhill, but that doesn't seem too feasible right now..

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@alontra it's a bafang 8FUN 36V hub motor

blogdiva,
@blogdiva@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online @steter knit a granny-square cover?

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@blogdiva that would probably do it

blogdiva,
@blogdiva@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online used to know a 'playground mom' that was a fabric artist. can't remember her name. but basically, she crocheted all the time. so she decided to make covers for abandoned things here in NYC. a bicycle was her first project and i wonder if this is her work (this was like 20 years ago, btw)

if you do a DDG of 'crochet bike' you'll find a lot of funky stuff.

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=crochet+bicycle&iax=images&ia=images

MLE_online,
@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

@blogdiva That's really fun. I should pick up crocheting again one of these days

smellsofbikes,
@smellsofbikes@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online @steter Oh that's easy just stick a "this is not a pipe bomb" sticker on it. That always works.
