We have many avenues to communicate now, but are no better at communication.

@StillIRise1963 ppl are really feeling this one. and i get it, i suck at using my words during conversations & especially on phone calls.

BUT i gotta say if y'all want more letters in the mail, write them! i send ppl letters, art & packages a few times a year, & sometimes get em in return. we always send postcards on vacation & sometimes, i drop one in the box randomly to say hi to a friend.

i also love stamps. just got a new set for nerds like me the other day..

"We have advanced to the point where the means we use to communicate are more elegant and important than what we have to say."

Chronic lateness inspired me to get engraved stationary to apologize in my thank-yous to everyone at my first professional gig...

So glad I did

Lost the dye though now I have to go get a new one if I want to reup I have like... 20 left? Every once in a while I'll make 100 copies of one

StillIRise1963,

@VoxofGod 😃 I had some back in the day as well. I loved writing a good letter. Now, my handwriting sucks because I never write anything. I wrote some condolence cards last week and they were atrocious. @Enema_Cowboy @richardrathe

@StillIRise1963 @VoxofGod @Enema_Cowboy @richardrathe I wrote so many letters when I was young. Nothing could compare to the thrill of getting a letter from a friend or SO. It’s nice to get an email from a long lost friend, but opening the mailbox to find a handwritten letter had a special intimacy. Miss that!

StillIRise1963,

@StillIRise1963 @underthestars @VoxofGod @Enema_Cowboy @richardrathe Cursive is a dying art.

There's just no pressing need for it, anymore.

I noticed that in a very crude way when going over some family bullshit.

Documents would get transited to digitized whenever I touched them.

The originals were all in cursive.

Most under 40s can't read that at all.

Under 20s think cursive is just old timey bullshit.

It used to be a whole world, though.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@justafrog It certainly did. My mom won awards in school. Penmanship was a big deal. I read that people looking at old documents couldn't read those in cursive anymore. @underthestars @VoxofGod @Enema_Cowboy @richardrathe

@StillIRise1963 @justafrog @underthestars @VoxofGod @Enema_Cowboy @richardrathe In young people's defense, plenty of them are interested in cursive and/or penmanship generally! Schools, however, have made the decision on whether it's important or not for them, and it has to become a hobby if they want to learn it. And that narrows the window of participation considerably.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

justafrog,

@StillIRise1963

It's weird how deprecated it got.

Like, today, you'd come off as poor and sad if you had a great cursive hand. Maybe the teacher can't even read if they're too young.

Most school work expects you have some computer to help you format stuff.

I imagine @futurebird is enough of a nerd to read it in stride though.

But also compassionate enough to give you a reality check.

@Infrogmation @StillIRise1963 @futurebird @underthestars @VoxofGod @Enema_Cowboy @richardrathe My mom still has a typewriter which was very, very modern in the 1980s.

The most strongly identifying marker of the aspirational citizen of those modern times.

40 years later,. she's 100% electronic about things.

She always moved with the times, but damn don't those times move something fierce.

@justafrog I have my parent's old Royal. It's manual and I used it in college. I used to temp as a secretary when I was in my late teens. I took typing in high school. @StillIRise1963 My mom's typewriter is 100% mechanical.

She spent the last 20+ years fully computerized at work.

I remember sending handwritten cringe love letters in the 1990s.

It was absolutely behind the times already.

I learned to type on a mechanical typewriter.

A friend recently remarked "My son's new high-school has two 3-D printers!"
I replied, "...My high-school had a ditto machine."

I imagined combining the technologies; a hand-cranked machine that made stinky purple 3-D copies.

I have a SW radio receiver. I used to see what AM radio stations I could pick up from around the world. I'd use the postal system to send a "QX report," and sometimes I'd get a letter/postcard in reply. When I lived near Minneapolis, I once got one from New Zealand.

VoxofGod,

@StillIRise1963 @Enema_Cowboy @richardrathe I was so thrilled cleaning up when I found them again I've always saved one or two for the copy thing but now I have a little cushion and who knows if I end up with some money I'll get another dye, for sure

@StillIRise1963 we're way worse, I think. I really hate recency bias but I feel like Western society has lost the ability to have a discussion.

I'm not at all suggesting this is a both sides issue though. The Right has decided to abandon any pretense of rationality and go all in on pure emotional appeal for their self destructive goals.
