Yes I'm a Smurf in Ingress Prime, a mobile game by Niantic.
But! I have to anger or hate towards players of other fractions. 😊
We need each other to level. To keep the game fun. For some healthy competition.
So while I Toot about Smurfing my town, I'm still very much open to chat with other players, no matter what faction you're playing.
Keep on leveling and grabbing those portals folks!
@PlaystationPixy I’ve seen so many opposite factions make friends in Pokémon Go, guessing it’s the same way in Ingress. Unlike online, people irl do seem to enjoy healthy competition and aren’t sore losers.
@elisse Ow yeah but there are a few that are very competitive! Not seen too many, most are kind to each other, but not all. But I guess that's with all sorts of games that have teams opposite each other. 😊
@PlaystationPixy Oh, are people ever unkind to you irl over Ingress? 😲 The ones I saw, even if determined to overtake the area, could make light of it.
Some places can get pretty toxic, sadly. I spent a weekend playing in Birmingham, England a couple of years ago, and met some lovely players of both factions, and the COMMs chat was lively but friendly, but as I was leaving things turned sour when two players with very different play styles just couldn't resist trolling each other.
People can get very possessive of what they see as “their” portals, which is never a good idea. I haven't seen much RES action around here this summer, but if it comes, I shall channel my inner Elsa (after trying to defend to the best of my abilities - it's impossible, basically)
@nic@elisse it's understandable that people can get competitive about it, as it's part of the game of course. But it's sad when it turns to being unkind towards other fractions. I mean, if there was just one fraction, the game would be way less fun I recon. 😊
@PlaystationPixy@elisse Weirdly, the one that affected me the most, and fairly local to me, was a player from my own faction getting upset because I wouldn't make things as easy as possible for new players of the opposite faction, by only building the weakest possible portals, never using strong shields, and so on.
@nic@elisse I do enjoy a challenge 😊 although level 8 portals do suck as my lvl 5 isn't up for those really. Not on my own. Two active frogs are level 16 here so they don't have any issue with my portals 😂
I don't go out of my way to be an arse, obviously, but I remember the first time I brought down a defended portal, how much I learnt about game mechanics (standing “on top" of resonators to make Ultra Strikes more effective and so on) and what a sense of achievement it gave me. The defending player congratulated me afterwards, and reclaimed the portal as soon as I'd left the area. Good times!
@nic@elisse yeah without a nice learning curve it may be a bit boring I guess so I get your point. But if newbies wanna level, it's better to give them something to do 😉
There is a built-in imbalance between low- and high-level players, but this is far less of an issue once you get to level 8+
Those who reach the level cap have the choice to “Recurse” and start again at level 1, which I've done 3 times now - I even switched factions and became a Smurf for one playthrough, which felt wrong!
