How often should you boost your own posts?

#netizens #netiquette #poll #survey #fediverse #boost #boosting

@kommadieb@norden.social avatar

@stefan I voted "every few days", but only because I don't like a higher frequency per account. Personally I only boost a minority of my posts, but when they are time critical or have a "temporal relevancy", I boost 1-2 times, for different time zones, so after 6/8/12-ish hours.

@kommadieb That makes sense!

KhunKai,

@stefan
People do that??

mongoose,

@stefan I occasionally find it useful to do it because of time zones. If I have something I want everyone to see, I'll post it in the morning so the people around the Greenwich meridian pick it up, then boost it in the evening to make sure the USA, Canada, and Aus/NZ get it. But I don't boost for the sake of it.

@jaycee@toot.community avatar

@stefan I don’t, but then modesty forbids.

sss,

@stefan I think it's fine on occasion for special/important toots, but if people do it daily or every other post from their account I'm going to hide boosts from them which means I may miss something they would like to share with their followers.

wmd,
@wmd@chaos.social avatar

@stefan I'd go for if you find it important enough for other timezones to see it.

I see no shame in boosting your own toots, but if it's only retoots things get a bit boring.

christian,
@christian@aldr.social avatar

@stefan I don't usually, but sometimes I share a picture I really like and might boost it after ~12h so that more folks get a chance of seeing it. Because timezones.

I think I've only ever self-boosted a few pics - I suppose it would make more sense if I self-boosted a question though , in the interest of getting more feedback / discussion. 🤔

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@christian Definitely makes sense to do it for folks living in different timezones.

@stefan I'm not really against self-boosting. But I just keep forgetting to do it. 😂

box464,
@box464@mastodon.social avatar

@stefan I boost posts from my accounts on other platforms IF I feel it’s relevant to that community group and the followers are mostly unique. Example.. I’ll boost a pixelfed post sometimes.

cybeardjm,
@cybeardjm@masto.ai avatar

@box464 @stefan Indeed, there are 2 things here IMHO:

  • boosting from a different platform (e.g. posts on Pixelfed to audience on Mastodon)
  • boosting on Mastodon an "old" post: I do it for different time zones as well, as @Andres stated earlier.

And I sometimes delete and redraft very old posts I bookmarked, as I do on blog posts too...

@stefan In the interests of irony, I think you should boost this 😂

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@stefan interesting...

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@jake4480 Yes, I thought that maybe the reason why "don't" got the most votes in the original poll was the lack of a more moderate option.

I guess not.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@stefan meh. I still do it sometimes. I've seen arguments for and against and always kind of go on the side of doing whatever the hell I want. Hahaha

Bodling,
@Bodling@deacon.social avatar

@stefan Wait! I can do that??

chrisamaphone,
@chrisamaphone@hci.social avatar

@stefan idg the “don’t!” reaction, other than that it reflects some vague social norm about it appearing self-absorbed? is there some other reason it annoys people??

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@chrisamaphone Very good question! You might have seen an earlier version of this poll where half the people felt this way.

https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/109954463175525577

It just occurred to me that I was missing an option between "once/twice a day" and "not at all", but interestingly, "don't" is a pretty strong sentiment here.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@chrisamaphone I personally don't mind people doing this, I've certainly nearly missed good posts because of the lack of algorithm, and I am a bit too lazy to use some of the third party tools people built.

I'm looking forward to some of the upcoming features on https://joinmastodon.org/roadmap

  • Timeline of public posts talking about a trending link
  • Home feed digest
botvolution,
@botvolution@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@chrisamaphone @stefan
Jeez I think people should do what they want on social media (subject to the usual caveats about abuse, isming etc), but over half of respondents think there are rules. How completely ass of them.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@botvolution @chrisamaphone Well, people also deserve to consume their social media the way the want.

I do wonder about the option to "Hide boosts from X" here on Mastodon. Does it only apply to people boosting others, or also their own posts?

@stefan
Personally I always boost my posts for different time zones.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar
