What is a fediverse-neutral word for "subtweet"? People here use "subtoot", but that's based on Mastodon's "toot", which is no longer officially used.

"Subpost" doesn't sound quite right. But I guess that's it?

@stefan who cares if it's 'official'? It's understood.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@JoeGrowling Right. But that's like addressing a group of individuals of mixed gender "guys". Everyone (?) understands this, but some do feel left out.

JoeGrowling,
@JoeGrowling@todon.eu avatar

@stefan hardly comparable. Nobody is going to be offended or hurt by what you call a social media post.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@JoeGrowling Fair enough.

Still, nothing wrong with making others feel included.

JoeGrowling,
@JoeGrowling@todon.eu avatar

@stefan obviously, but over-thinking politically correct language and stretching it into irrelevant minutiae of technical language undermines the more important issues, makes the whole idea of inclusive language appear less serious.

@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@JoeGrowling I do see where you're coming from.

At the same time, maybe if we could get the little things right, maybe it would help folks get used to the idea of inclusivity and build a better foundation to tackle the bigger stuff?

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@JoeGrowling I don't know. Just a thought. I personally don't care enough when people say "Mastodon" when they actually mean "fediverse", certainly not enough to "correct" people.

But sometimes I do wonder about folks who use other platforms, often pre-dating Mastodon itself. I can see how that might get a bit annoying, I guess.

@stefan if you want to be vendor neutral, use "subpost". if you want to be accurate to the activitypub specification, you can use "subnote"

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@mia Good to know, thank you!

"Subpost" is actually starting to grow on me.

AmyIsCoolz,

@stefan I've heard "subpost" and occasionally "subnote" from *key.

@AmyIsCoolz @stefan subpost is the best of the bunch. sub/vague post (vaguepost is the tumblr term)

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@puppygirlhornypost @AmyIsCoolz Yes, I think "subpost" is starting to grow on me.

@stefan “Reply”?

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@jonobie Well that's a bit different.

"a usually mocking or critical tweet that alludes to another Twitter user without including a link to the user's account and often without directly mentioning the user's name"

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/subtweet

A reply would be directed at the person.

jonobie,
@jonobie@social.coop avatar

@stefan Ahhh, I guess I didn’t realize some of the nuances in the word. Agree reply doesn’t cut it at all.

mcmullin,
@mcmullin@musicians.today avatar

@stefan
I’ve been wondering that too, since I don’t like “toot.”

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@mcmullin Yeah, I don't really mind it too much, personally, but I'd like to see us move away from Mastodon-centric language. Including using hashtags like "bookstodon" etc.

You know, to make sure folks who use other platforms don't feel excluded.

wordsmith,
@wordsmith@writing.exchange avatar

@stefan it's officially used from where I'm sitting :-)

stefan,

@wordsmith Fair enough!
