Let’s talk tags on clothing. I hate them and they annoy me to no end. And even if I cut them off, the tiny bit remaining always manages to touch me and I hate it. 😩

Do tags bother you?

enby_of_the_apocalypse,

@actuallyautistic @autism101 my life became so much better when I realized that a lot (sadly not all) tags are sown on top of the seams that keep the clothing together with their own little seam, so if you’re careful and make sure to look closely if this is really the case and to distinguish the two seams you can just cut the stitches and completely remove them with a seamripper or if you don’t have one and are very careful/ok with it being a little finicky the tip of a sharp, narrow knife.

I seem to be hyposensitive to clothes. The other day, I wore my sweatshirt back-to-front (i.e. in mild strangulation mode) for four hours before Helen spotted it. 😄

It may be that the reason tags don't bother me is that I was brought up wearing collared shirts and ties, which cause a stronger sensation on the skin than a tag does.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic I hate them. Absolutely. I have an irritated and scratched open patch on my hip just now from a tag I didn't think to rip out and then I was scratching at the place the whole day. Argh! The only good shirts are those where the information is just printed inside. The tags have to go!

ashleyspencer,
@ashleyspencer@autistics.life avatar

@autism101 @actuallyautistic They do. Which is also why I made all the clothing in my store tag-less. :) I think no one likes tags, autistic or not.

If you don't have dyspraxia you could try taking them out of the seam. Use a seam ripper to open up the spot where the tag is, remove the tag completely, then sew the spot shut again :)

That said, I'm the opposite. Tags don't bother me and sometimes I need to put a scratchy scrap of fabric on the small of my back because the light touch of my underwear drives me up the wall -.-

@autism101 @actuallyautistic hate tags and cut them out, and yes, the bits annoy me.

I seem to be in a small minority here: clothing tags don't bother me at all. What does itch from time to time is my hairy back. The older I get, the hairier my body becomes.

alexisbushnell,
@alexisbushnell@toot.wales avatar

@nddev @autism101 @actuallyautistic they don't bother me as a rule either. There are some that have especially spiky corners but mostly they don't bother me.

I do get random itching and rashes for reasons unknown though.

You mean the "phantom spider" papers that are attached to all shirts and freak you out until removed?

It's 2024, tags touching anywhere near the neckline or using non-soft materials shouldn't even be a thing anymore, yet here we are

@autism101 @actuallyautistic GOD I HATE TAGS ON CLOTHING SO MUCH

@autism101 @actuallyautistic décathlon has the smart idea to only atach the tag to extra bits of normal bits of fabrics. So you dont feel it after removal👌

@autism101 Tags REALLY bother me and I have to snip them out or rip them off with my bare hands.

Have you ever had clothing with an embroidered design on the front, the cotton they attach them with might as well be barbed wire lol. @actuallyautistic @Loukas

Even the "tagless" tags bother me. After so many washings, the ink hardens, turns rough, and irritates my skin. I can't win.

Mikewashere,

@autism101 @actuallyautistic It's not the tags that bothers me. I have purchased numerous T shirts where the shoulder stitching is so unbearable, I can no longer wear them. It's whatever the stitching is made of, not so much the tags themselves. That's why when you remove the tags, they still irritate the hell out of you.

Oh yes! I immediately remove tags.

Every single time, she said, learning newly that this is an autistic thing (thanks for that, I'm still learning about myself).

I favour companies who print the information on the inside of the collar or below it. No tag, no stump of a tag, nothing to annoy.

f1337,

@autism101 @actuallyautistic
Tip: if the tag has two parts, pull them away from each other using equal force, and the tags will tear apart, without harming the stitching.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic they used to but i grew out of it TBH. Well, the kind of tags that are on the clothes i actually wear which were new or already old when i was bothered by tags. In crappy new clothes tags are insane and gross so i get it but i don't wear those. What bugs me even more is how everything modern is horribly skin-tight or stiff and uncomfortable. Seriously, what idiot decided tshirts had to be "fitted" anyways.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic Depends on the tag. They don't usually bother me. But when they do, I'm in a dilemma: remove the tag and thus the washing instructions (I need them 🙈), keep the tag and feel itchy and thus never wear the piece or throw it out altogether.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic Yup. I will do anything it takes to take out an itchy tag. I am always happy when a shirt has printing there instead of a tag sewn in. I did this for decades before realizing I was ND. So many shirts had holes where tags once were!
